A NEW series coming to JoelsViews.com

Posted by on Monday, 13 February, 2012

About 2 years ago, March 2010, I came up with the idea of a new way for people to share more about themselves on Twitter, called Twitterviews. It would consist of a 1hr interview, conducted totally on Twitter. It would allow them to share things about themselves such as where they grew up, their interests, hobbies, passions and their goals for themselves for the future. Not only did it provide more exposure for them to other people, it turned out to be a great networking tool for myself and for them as well. I’ve currently conducted over 300 of them, and am still benefiting from them. In fact, it led me to now conducting them on behalf of the locally based magazine, Minnesota Monthly. What an opportunity!

This leads me to my next venture. Starting this Thursday, February 16th, I will be starting a NEW YouTube series of interviews with people in Minnesota called: Faces of Minnesota.   It will be interviews conducted with people in a variety of fields of work and backgrounds. You may have seen, heard or read some of their work, but these interviews will let you learn even more about them. I’m also pleased to announce that my first guest will be Elizabeth Ries of “Twin Cities Live” and the “Dirt Alert” on My Talk 107.1 FM. She’ll be a great start to this brand new series.

Joel Carlson & Elizabeth Ries

I hope that you enjoy this new series as you get to know more about the featured guests. If you have a suggestion or an idea of someone that you feel would make a great featured guest, please Tweet me, send me an email or call me. I’d be happy to hear and take your suggestions.  Enjoy!

@JoelECarlson: Hello everyone, and welcome to today’s with my special guest @alexisthompson1 of @MyTalk1071. Lets get to Tweet’n!

Q – #1    As your VIDEO shows – http://t.co/uw94zyS you’ve lived in this area for awhile. How though did you come to work at @MyTalk1071?

Alexis: I answered a job posting online, but for @ks95! Someone from @MyTalk1071 (which was FM107.1 at the time) called

I moved home from Boston; I didn’t know @mytalk1071, but happy I went in for interview, started as a wkend prod

Q – #2    When did you know that you wanted to get involved with radio? Did you pretend with a Mr. Microphone as a kid?

Alexis: Haha! Well, I have always loved radio! I would pretend to be a lot of things as a kid…

a radio announcer, Whitney Houston, an aerobics instructor…I had a radio show in college “Shake Your Can”

There’s where I really fell for radio…seeing & participating in process…my Mr. Microphone was a round hairbrush:)

Q – #3    By the name “Shake your Can”, I’m guessing not a radio cooking show? Dance music maybe? How long did you do that?

Alexis: LOL, no Easy Bake Ovens tips on “Shake Your Can”; we played dance music & talked about pop culture, things on campus

Sound familiar? Pretty cool how it coincides with what I do now

My Bestie Kelly and I hosted and produced “Shake Your Can” for a couple years at WTBU

Q – #4    Your co-host, @JasonMatheson, did you know each other before you started working together?

Alexis: @JasonMatheson and I didn’t know each other before working at the station; although it’s been a long time!

Q – #5    So who or what bright the 2 of you together to do this show? re: @JasonMatheson

Alexis: @JasonMatheson would come on The Kevyn Burger Show on Fridays to talk movies, entertainment; I was Kevyn’s producer

@JasonMatheson Even over the phone we got along! Our PD Amy Daniels paired us with Meredith Templitz to do a show…

That was “Saturday Night Groove”…our friendship grew from there…

Q – #6    Ah! I see. In addition to radio, how has your jump into Social Media use been going for you? Facebook? Foursquare?

Alexis: I have to admit, I was tardy to the Social Media party. My sis signed me up for FB, still have password she picked…

I got on Twitter, I think last November? I’m getting there…still a lot to learn! You’re showing me a Whole New World

I feel like Jasmine on a exciting carpet ride! I don’t use Foursquare…should I?

Q – #7    Glad to help! :) Now to some of your FAVORITES: Restaurant, store, comfort food, TV show, Nat’l radio person.

Alexis: I love to eat at Bar La Grassa, @TriaRestaurant (in my neck of the woods :), Sakura and @dancingganesha

Shopping: Hunt and Gather and Mall of St. Paul for vintage/antiques, for clothes: Ann Taylor Loft, J. Crew, Marshalls

For beads (I make most of my jewelry & will launch business soon :): Bobby Beads, @beadhive, @thebeadmonkey…

Cosecha Designs, J Ring Glass…sorry, more bead stores :) I love salty, savory foods for comfort: potato chips & fries

I LOVE Criminal Minds and Law and Order SVU, I’m also a Gleek! For national radio, I like listening to @HowardStern

Sorry, that was a mouthful of tweets and I think I broke your rule of only 5 responses heehee

Alexis: Another great show I think everyone should watch and enterprise reporting at its best: @CBSNews Sunday Morning

@JoelECarlson: @alexisthompson1 I’m a faithful watcher of @CBSsunday. :)

Q – #8   That’s okay. Our 1hr is up, so last question, what professional/personal goal do you want to achieve this year?

Alexis: I want @mytalk1071 to continue to grow (please tell your friends about us), start my own YouTube channel, some TV…

Personally, I want to continue to grow with my husband; we got married last June

He just got an iPhone and now tweets @mistertoro :) He’s a funny one to follow

I want to be a better dog mom to Pacquiao “Pac” named after @MannyPacquiao (@mistertoro and I love him!)

@JoelECarlson: Thank you very much @alexisthompson1 for your time with me last Friday and today on #jectv. Have a great week!

Alexis: Great meeting you! Thank you! Happy Hump Day :)

Twitterview with Kieran Folliard / The Local

Posted by on Monday, 14 March, 2011

@JoelECarlson – Hello everyone, and welcome to the Twitterview of Kieran Folliard. He will be using @TheLocalMPLS as his Twitter account. Lets begin!

Q – #1    To begin, this week is the launch of your new whiskey, #2gingers. What led to it’s development?

Kieran: Five years of being the #1 Jameson account in the world and the success of our trademarked drinks Big and Skinny Ginger gave us (con’t)

the opportunity to partner with Coolery Distillery in Ireland.

Q – #2    Had the thought/dream of the #2gingers been something on your mind to do for some time?

Kieran: You don’t have to be Irish to think launching your own whiskey brand seems like an interesting journey!

Q – #3    When will the #2gingers be available for the public to try?

Kieran: The christening of 2 Gingers will be at 5pm on Wednesday the 16th @TheLocalMpls. Then 530pm @KieransMPLS (con’t)

then 6pm @CooperIrishPub and 7pm @The_Liffey. There will be bagpipers, whiskey barrels and flame throwers. :)

With a free 2 Gingers for everyone (21+) at each pub!

Q – #4    I see. For those new to your establishments, what 2 featured drinks will the #2gingers be an ingredient in?

Kieran: Our featured drinks have become trademarked. They are the Big Ginger and the Skinny Ginger. Very simple yet egalitarian.

Fill collins glass with ice, 2 oz of Two Gingers, fill with ginger ale and garnish with a wedge of lemon and lime slice!

Q – #5    You first came onto the scene with @KieransMPLS. In a crowded food/drink scene in Mpls, what made you try?

Kieran: loved sitting in pubs drinking pints and talking rubbish. Why not punch the clock everyday?

Q – #6    I read in a @MNMOmag article that not only is the product important to you, but also your personnel. Can you explain?

Kieran: As an independent pub business, any product such as 2 Gingers or Green Ox that comes from us internally (con’t)

and is of high quality, all of us collectively feel a personal connection to it. We’re all part of the story. (con’t)

And with that comes a certain sense of pride which we all take ownership of.

Q – #7    Kudos to you! It seems like more companies that treat employees well have a good retention of them! True for you?

Kieran: Absolutely! We have colleagues who have been with us for 17 years @KieransMPLS, 7 ppl who have been with us for 10+ yrs

now have ownership in the company. And hopefully we’ll have many more to come.

Q – #8    Great format to ask this – Do you have any job openings at either of your 4 locations?

Kieran: We’re always looking for friendly people! Stop in and say you’re related to the 2 Gingers!

Q – #9    Nice. We’ll be ending soon, but you mentioned a product called #GreenOx earlier. Can you explain what that is?

Kieran: #GreenOx is our partnership with chef Mike Phillips. He purchases local pigs and lambs. He produces a wide variety of (cont)

charcuterie and sausage. Currently they’re on the menus at all 4 pubs, but hopefully they’ll be available in the (cont)

retail market with the next year or so.

@JoelECarlson – Thank you so much @TheLocalMpls (Kieran Folliard) for your time, comments and care that you bring to the Twin Cities! Excellent!

Kieran: Thank you for the opportunity to share. We hopefully see you on Wednesday for the big 2 Gingers launch!

Twitterview with Sara Boyd

Posted by on Monday, 14 March, 2011

@JoelECarlson: Welcome everyone! Today’s Twitterview with @SaraBoyd of @wcco starts now! Lets get to Tweeting!

Sara: Wahoo! Thanks for having me! (Sorry in advance for clogging people’s feeds) :)

Q – #1    So @SaraBoyd. Where did yo grow up, go to school and what was your 1st job?

Sara: I grew up in the lovely suburb of Shoreview, went to Mounds View (Go Mustangs!) and then headed to UW-Eau Claire.

My first job was a receptionist for Coldwell Banker Burnet where I answered calls and set up showings. Thrilling stuff.

I got a lot of calls where people would say “I’m at a blue house that’s for sale, how much is it?” #awesome

Q – #2    How did you get interested in the web and social media? What kind of schooling have you had?

Sara: I went to college for print journalism and was right at the turning point where online was becoming the new thing.

So I started taking a few CS classes, which got me really excited for the so-called “new wave” of journalism.

I’ve always loved social media, or should I say, I’ve always been sucked in. It’s just such a great way to connect.

Q – #3    It is fun, but can also be a “time trap”. :) After your Coldwell Banker Burnet job, what led you to @wcco?

Sara: So very true. It’s consumed hours of my life I’ll never get back. :)

I worked at CBB in high school, so once I got to UWEC, I got an internship at the Eau Claire paper.

After the Leader-Telegram, I got a scholarship which included an internship @WashingtonPost, which was incredible.

From there, I had 1 more internship at the Green Bay Press-Gazette before accepting a full time job as a reporter there

After missing my family, TC life and um, culture, I finally moved back home after getting the job at ‘CCO.

That was my first job moving from newspapers to the “dark side” of broadcast TV :)

Q – #4    I think you just lost all of your WI followers. :)  So what is your role with @wcco, and what does that entail?

Sara: Haha, Green Bay is its own unique animal in WI. :)

At ‘CCO, I’m a Web Producer, which entails writing & editing stories for the web, making TV stories “web-friendly” …

posting to WCCO’s The Wire and helping with social media, etc. Plus, anything else that comes along for the web.

Q – #5    I see. In your opinion, does Social Media and the urge to break a story 1st affect the accuracy of stories?

Sara: It can, if you let it. For us, accuracy always needs to be No. 1. We’d rather wait until we have the full story.

We’d rather be correct first than just first. In our tweets, for example, we always try to wait to link to the story.

You can be first every time but be wrong half of those times, and that’s much more damaging than being second.

Q – #6    Good guidelines to have with stories! Now your FAVORITES: Restaurant, store, comfort food and outdoor activity.

Sara: Ooh, that’s tough! For restaurants, I basically have a favorite for every genre of food.

If I had to pick 1, I’m loving Cafe Lurcat right now. Love shopping at Patina. And always love a good mac & cheese!

For outdoor activity — 1st of all, not until it reaches at least 50 — but I enjoy clichéd long walks in the park.

Q – #7    I see. What goal do you have for yourself for the next few months or years to achieve?

Sara: I’d love to own my own island, or find a cure for cancer. But if not that, then to continue expanding wcco.com’s reach

I’d love to do even more in terms of entertainment coverage and capitalizing on our TC offerings.

@JoelECarlson: Thank you Sara for being a Twitterview guest today. All the best with your work at CCO’!

Sara: Thanks Joel! It was fun!

Twitterview with Daniel Olson

Posted by on Tuesday, 8 March, 2011

@JoelECarlson – Hello everybody, and welcome to the Twitterview of former @Wienermobile driver @mrdolson. Time to ketchup with him! :)

@mrdolson – nice to see you use one of the old stand-by puns right of the bat, Joel. Excited to be here

Q – #1    So @mrdolson, what did you study in college and how did that help you land the @Wienermobile job? Lots of traveling involved?

Daniel: First, thanks for having me @joelecarlson. I studied print journalism at the U of MO (go Tigers), so my familiarity with media helped

Additionally, I did media relations work that required traveling for Mizzou’s women’s soccer team, so I was accustomed to travel

Lastly, I suppose my general enthusiasm for the brand and my lack of reservations with talking with strangers helped, too

And, yes, it did require a lot of travel. I hit 32 states in my 12 months on the job. Getting paid is the best way to travel

Q – #2    Did you actually sell/provide hot dogs out of the @Wienermobile? What kind of facts did you have to learn?

Daniel: Actually, we didn’t give out any hot dogs because of vending licenses…we were on the go so much that we would have needed hundreds

We did, however, give out the much coveted Wiener Whistles, which people actually followed us hundreds of miles for,

We learned a lot about the company’s history, as well as engine specs, and the height/length/width of the WMB in hot dogs

The @Wienermobile is 18 hot dogs wide, in case you wanted to know.

Q – #3    Following the @winermobile gig, you worked for the @Cavs when they had @KingJames. What was that experience like?

Daniel: It was a lot of fun to be with the @Cavs when the team was playing at such a high level, and to see the excitement it brought to CLE

As a lifelong sports fan, it was fun to see @KingJames up close in person at work every day, but it was also a lot of hours with gms.

And, no, it wasn’t part of my routine to hang out with the players, though they often participated in season ticket holder events

So it was fun to see their personalities there. Delonte West was the most charismatic of all the players on the team I worked for.

Q – #4    Where do you work now, and what’s your role there entail?

Daniel: I currently work @cl_spong, an agency I had my eye on since I moved back to the TC. My title is social media specialist …

… but I also work on the traditional acct. side with clients like Jack Link’s, SUPERVALU, Schlage, Kryptonite, etc.

In my day-to-day role, I usually am working with clients who want to expand or enhance the impact of their presence online

this can take the form of running social media pages, developing specific PR campaigns or offering POVs on response tactics

The great thing about social mediums is that they’ve ushered in a new era of experimentation, IMO. It makes you think outside the box

Q – #5    Agreed! Lets now shift to your FAVORITES: restaurant, store, winter activity, comfort food and recent book or blog.

Daniel: Fave restaurants at the moment would be @BarLaGrassa, 112 Eatery and @HauteDish, three of the best meals you can get in Minneapolis

I’m a pretty big gadget guy, so for store I would have to say Apple. Favorite winter activity involves retreating indoors for soccer

I play in leagues at the UofM and Augsburg college right now. As for comfort food, a nice bowl of Pho or a homemade mac ‘n cheese

As for reading, the most recent book I finished was a collection of short pieces from Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Q – #6    Got any takes on Facebook and all of the changes they keep making? What would YOU keep or change?

Daniel: Well, @joelecarlson, I think that Facebook’s frequent changes are making it more difficult for small businesses to keep up

For how much talk surrounds Facebook as an asset to small businesses, they put strain on companies by constantly making them update

I think that companies that invest in the look and feel of their pages will see greater returns as a result.

I would like to see Facebook offer a better product for musicians, though, and finally figure out their security stance.

Q – #7    Very true! For FB to appeal to small/med businesses, they need to keep it simple. :) Got any prof goals for yourself?

Daniel: My goals for the short-term are to keep learning from the great people around me @cl_spong and also to get more involved …

In the fantastically rich PR/communications/ad community here in MSP. The passion this city has in these areas is inspiring

I figure, as long as I can continue to surround myself with smarter, more experienced people, I can learn through osmosis :)

Q – #8    Indeed! Lastly, I know you like to cook, so if you could invite any 1 person (dead/alive) over for a meal, who and why?

Daniel: Ooo, tought question. Because of my love of soccer, and the fact we share a birthday, I would have to say Pele.

Though I might need to learn a Brazilian dish or two to impress him

@JoelECarlson – Makes sense. Thanks so much @mrdolson for your time and comments today. Have a great week!

@mrdolson – Thanks, @JoelECarlson, I really enjoyed myself. Thanks again for all you do in connecting pros within MSP. Have a great week yourself

Twitterview with Ryan May

Posted by on Friday, 4 March, 2011

@JoelECarlson – Hello everyone, and welcome to the 1yr Anniversary Twitterview with @mnpr (Ryan May) as the guest. Lets get the party started!

@mnpr – I am ready Joel

Q – #1    tell us a little bit about yourself. Where did you grow up, where did you go to school and where did you start after school?

Ryan: I am Minnesota born and raised. I went to @UMN_SJMC and hoped to be a DJ. Life took a different direction.

After graduation I received my first offer in radio for $18,000 a year. I knew I couldn’t survive, so I made a course correction.

I ended up working for @patrickstrother at Strother out of college. It was a great learning experience.

Q – #2    So after @PatrickStrother, what other work did you do that led you  to @mnpr?

Ryan: My focus has always been hi-tech PR. When I was offered a job in April, 2002 @baesystemsInc I couldn’t resist.

@baesystemsinc gave me free reign to explore communications. I started my blog in February of 2003. It’s been a great experiment

The @mnpr blog was just a way to get my name out to local professionals. Anyone who’s work in corporate knows you need to do outreach

Q – #3    How long have you been on Twitter, and how is your #Honeywell campaign going?

A: I have been on Twitter since Sept 2007. It has been a great professional development tool. It is has led me to multiple interviews.

I have had success in getting interviews I haven’t landed a job yet. As you mentioned, I recently ran a #hiremehoneywell campaign.

I thought the Honeywell position was mostly social media. Turns out they wanted mostly traditional media relations.

While I feel like I have media relations skills I don’t have the contacts @honeywellgrid was looking for nationally.

The best thing about #hiremehoneywell was the feed back I got from follower. 13-pages of great comments.

Q #4    Something will no doubt turn up for you! What other interests or hobbies do you get involved with?

Ryan: Right now I have two kids. A one-year-old and a two-year-old. My hobby is reading parenting books a tickling my kids.

My wife runs a blog www.samuelmay.com. I help her think of ideas to post. I am trying to get her on twitter @initstime.

I can’t wait for Samuel to be old enough to go snowboarding.

Q – #5    Do you snowboard? Now your FAVORITES: Restaurant, store, winter activity, comfort food and recent book or blog.

Ryan: I have been snowboarding since before it was allowed in Minnesota. That should age me some.

I love to drink coffee. I mean I LOVE to drink coffee. I am @starbucks right now and I frequent Diamonds too – http://bit.ly/gbrAtM

Beer is right up there with coffee. If I were to choose a place right now I would say @bulldogne is the place to go.

Books are tricky. I mostly read parenting books now and kids books.

Q – #6    If you could pick to have a meal/coffee with any 1 person dead/alive, who would you pick and why?

Easy – @barackobama. Beyond the fact he is leader of the free world. I think it would be great to talk policy with him.

@JoelECarlson – THANKS @mnpr for sharing some of your time and thoughts today on the 1yr anniversary of #jectv. Have a great evening!

Ryan: You too Joel. Thanks for engaging me and for your great blog. Keep it up.
