Marie Flanagan of the TC Taste blog

Posted by on Monday, 2 April, 2012

Good morning all! Welcome to today’s @MNMOmag Twitterview with #DaraCo blogger/contributor, @reetsyburger. Lets roll!

To start with @reetsyburger, tell us a little bit about your background. Where did you grow up?

Marie:    I grew up in a small(ish) town near Milwaukee, West Bend.

What kinds of things interested you as a child and what did you want to be when you grew up?

Marie:    As a kid, I just HAD to be a chef. As a young adult, I wanted to be a writer. Later, I got the civil service bug.

I loved cooking in my mom’s kitchen (when she wasn’t looking) and making up Pogoball routines to top 40 jams.

So what were some of your first jobs, and what formed your interest in food, especially sustainable food?

Marie:    I worked at a pizza/sandwich shop in high school and college. I learned that I was too short for commercial kitchens.

As a kid, I watched cooking shows more than cartoons – mostly on PBS. My mom was -and still is- an urban homesteader.

Mom’s urban garden fed a family of 8 with plenty to spare. We feasted all summer while we canned and packed soup jars.

It wasn’t until I was hired by the @SAREProgram that my interests in food, writing, and civil service converged.

Interesting. So your childhood really influenced who you are today. :) How did you get connected with #DaraCo?

Marie:    I started blogging in 2005. I moved to Minneapolis in 2006, and was charmed by the food scene, so I blogged about it.

At some point, @DearDara must’ve started reading my blog because in 2010, she emailed me. I was pumped.

I can imagine. So what would you say are the main topics that you cover for #DaraCo with @MNMOmag?

Marie:    Every day, farmers, ranchers, and chefs in MN develop innovative strategies to produce and distribute food .

Great! To close, what do you hope your blog moves people to do?

Marie: I hope it will help bring more attention to all the great producers and chefs in MN who care about sustainability.

Joel:    Thank you very much for your time today with #MNMOtv. Have a great week and keep up the good work!

Marie:    Thanks for having me. That was my first twitterview!

Jennifer Iwanicki of Curation Station & Hello Viking

Posted by on Friday, 23 March, 2012

Greetings everyone! Today’s #MNMOtv guest today is @jiwanicki (Jennifer Iwanicki) of the @curationstation. Lets get to know her!

Jennifer:    Hello Everyone! Glad to be here.

Share a little bit about your early years. Where did you grew up, attend school and what job did you want as an adult?

Jennifer:    I’m from Massachusetts. (Go Pats! @patriots) I thought I would be a lawyer when I grew up.

But I even changed that and played music in a rock band for a while before entering a career in management.

You’ll get the hang of it. So what kinds of companies did you first work for? When did you get the entrepreneur bug?

Jennifer:    I began managing a clothing company.Where I began writing code as a developer. I had a side business: Hullabaloo.

Hullabaloo created multimedia events in the city of Boston.

Great name! re: Hullaboloo – What got you to move to MN from the East Coast?

Jennifer:    The cold :)

Seriously, there was an opportunity for my family here, and we moved for that.

When I got here, I was incredibly impressed with the marketing community and went to my first MIMA event @mimatweet

When did you start with @HelloViking, and how did the idea of @CurationStation come to you?

Jennifer:    Ahh, yes! HV was started in 2007

My partner @tbrunelle and I started the company after winning a project with PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Curation Station was birthed out of Hello Viking. Through working with marketers, we noticed a need.

So we spent some time doing alpha & beta testing with some key groups and developed Curation Station based on the feedback.

The need we identified was in how to put digital content to work and be more efficient in doing so

What kind of response have your gotten with @curationstation?

Jennifer:    The response for content curation has been huge. We are fulfilling the needs of agencies, CMO’s, etc

We are doing this through engagement, content management, gained efficiencies, etc.

The tool is quite flexible and powerful. We continue to be excited by the possibilities for use.

What did you think when @MNMOmag approached you about being included in their “the Revolutionaries” magazine section?

Jennifer:    So many emotions! Shock, excitement, flattery. The list goes on. And I wondered what it meant, right?

I mean, it’s an honor and someone I have aspired to- to think outside of the box and try new things.

So to be recognized for that within the group of Minnesotans who were also recognized is thrilling.

But there are so many people who have helped and guided me to this place. And I thank them all.

Congrats! So what’s on the radar for you now? More new Biz ideas? Got any professional goals you’re striving to achieve?

Jennifer:    Today, I have my hands full with the current businesses. My focus right now is on growth.

But I am always thinking about ways to become more efficient professionally.

I do have more ideas for projects and products. And suspect I will get to those eventually

Joel:    Sounds like some good plans Jennifer. Thanks for your time today and thanks for being a part of #MNMOtv!

Jennifer:    Thank you Joel. It was my pleasure. And a truly unique experience!

Jeff Glor of CBS News

Jeff Glor

Good morning everyone! Welcome @jeffglor of @CBSNews & @CBSThisMorning to #jectv Twitterviews! Lets get this things rolling. :)

Jeff:    Ready!

To start off with, please share a little about yourself. Where did you grow up and what schools did you attend?

Jeff:    Grew up in Tonawanda, NY. Attended Kenmore East High School and Syracuse University

What did you major in at Syracuse and are you a fan of their basketball team?

Jeff:    Dual major, Economics and Broadcast Journalism. Yes, fan of the basketball team. Of course!

So do you have a NCAA Basketball Bracket filled out, and how far do you have Syracuse going?

Jeff:    I have them going all the way, but right now that may be more heart than head. Loss of Melo stings.

Yes it does. They’ll still do well. :) Share now, if you will, your progression from college to the @CBSNews desk.

Jeff:    WSTM in Syracuse, WHDH in Boston, joined CBS News early 2007

Quick progression! In 1-5 Tweets, did you have any stories in Syracuse or Boston that you were honored/proud of covering?

Jeff:    Well I would say one of the bigger moments in Syracuse was when I covered the papal trip to Toronto

in Boston, the Athens Olympics was memorable. We spent a month there

You’ve done a number of assignments for @CBSNews as well, including reporting from Haiti. What impact did that have on you?

Jeff:    A pretty big one. Some of the most heartbreaking images I’ve ever seen.

and, for those not following, two years on, it hasn’t gotten much better.

On disaster assignments like the Hatti earthquake, you’re there to report the news, but don’t you feel like helping too?

Jeff:    sure, and that doesn’t mean we can’t, by telling their stories in the best way possible. Shining a light.

Telling a good story can definitely move other people to activity as well. Besides Athens, any other Olympic assignments?

Jeff:    yes, was also there for Atlanta Olympics (’96), Beijing (’08), and Vancouver (’10)

What kind of experience have those been for you in covering them, and are you a sports-person in general?

Jeff:    Definitely a sports guy, but the Olympics are so fascinating because they can also be about so much more.

the intersection of sports/cultures/politics/and more. I’ve always enjoyed doing stories that reach beyond the games

on a side sports note, you already have pass rusher. If you wanna encourage Mario Williams to sign w/Bills, please do.

You are somewhat of an adventure taker yourself right? Didn’t you do a story about base jumping or something similar?

Jeff:    Yeah I went skydiving last year. Going up with Blue Angels soon.

Joel:    Thanks Jeff for your time today. Are there any reports coming up soon that we should look for?

Congrats too on your Emmy last year and your “Author Talk” blog series for @CBSNews. Great use of technology!

Jeff:    Got a fun one coming up tomorrow (3/16/12) morning you may want to check out. Should run 8:45 am EDT. Get ready to jump.

and thank you Joel. Enjoyed it.

Thank you! You’re doing some very cool stuff. I will keep watching for sure

Joel:    Thank you very much. I appreciate your kind words and I’ll look out for your report tomorrow.

David Weinstein, owner of the Rye Deli

Posted by on Wednesday, 7 March, 2012

Good morning! Today’s @MNMOmag Twitterview is with the owner of the @RyeDeli in Minneapolis, David Weinstein. Let get started!

Before we talk about your deli, lets learn a little bit about yourself. Where did you grow up and go to school David?

David:    Thanks for inviting me Joel. I grew up in Hartford CT and went to school in upstate NY and law school in New Orleans

Very different places

I’ll say! So when you were growing up, what did you want to do for work, and was eating at a deli common for you?

David:    I first thought I wanted to be an architect — then law. We actually did not have great delis in CT.

But I remember always eating at Katz’s on trips to NY with the family and loved watching guys carving sandwiches.

Nice memories! So after law school, what led you to come to MN and open a deli?

David:    Moving to MN was about 15 years pre-deli. My wife Pam is from St Paul. I didn’t have a chance of staying East.

I practiced law for about 10 yrs and then worked in commercial real estate. Then started looking at this building.

I felt we really needed a good deli in town as well as a good neighborhood gatherng spot in this particular location.

And not being a restaurant guy myself, I started talking with Tobie Nidetz who was equally passionate about it.

That was about a year ago — and here we are.

Had you worked in the restaurant business at all before? In what ways did Tobie help you?

David:    I had worked with restaurants as a lawyer and in real estate but knew I needed a real restaurant operator here.

Tobie is our GM and was instrumental in developing the concept, the kitchen, the menu, etc etc

I see. So what kind of “vision” did you have for your Deli? What were some of the things you felt HAD TO be on the menu?

David:    Vision is to create a unique place using traditional deli flavors and ingredients in a scratch, sustainable kitchen

The critical items are great bagels, bialys, and house-made meats using antibiotic and hormone free beef.

And of course great local craft beers (as well as He’Brew).

Finally, a great black and white cookie, which you don’t see much of in MN.

Now that you’re open, what have been some of the more popular items on your menu? What’s for dessert options?

David:    The most poupular item has been the Knife & Fork Reuben, served as an open faced platter the way Reuben himself did

For breakfast, our challah french toast and lox bagel have both been flying.

All of our dessert items are baked here — traditional cheesecake, B&W cookies, and our rugalach lead the pack

My mouth is starting to water! Is it lunchtime yet? :) So where can people find you and what are your hours?

David:    We are in the old Auriga bldg — 1930 Hennepin Ave. Online at rye deli.com.

Open at 7 AM every day and kitchen closes at midnight — bar stays open even later

So David, looking ahead a few years, do you see yourself possibly expanding the deli to other locations?

David:    You are like the guest who asked me on our very first day open when we were opening in Minnetonka.

I probably sound like a politician but — you never know what the future holds but right now we are focusing here.

But we are about to start catering and delivery — so get in your orders for Superbowl parties!

Joel:    Nice timing! :)  Thank you for your time today and being part of a @MNMOmag Twitterview. Have great day!

David:   Thanks again for the invite. It was fun and we are holding a seat at the bar for you.

Matt McCormack discusses the Minnesota Swarm

Posted by on Monday, 5 March, 2012

Good Friday morning everyone! Do you know what the @NLLNetwork is? Do you know who the @Minnesota_Swarm are? Matt McCormack does!

Matt:    Looking forward to sharing!

Welcome Matt! So when did the NLL first start and when did the #Swarm first start?

Matt:    Surprising to many, especially here, – the #NLL is actually in it’s 26th year. The #MNSWARM are in our 8th season.

How many teams are currently in the league, and how are the #swarm doing at the midway point of the season?

Matt:    9 teams in the #NLL. The season has been exciting 4-3 right now (best start since ’08) with VERY young team. (cont)

Had 4 #AllStars, defending scoring champ @beniboi21 off to great start; @EvanKirk35 was the Feb Rookie of the month

That’s great new about @beniboi21 and @EvanKirk35! There was a coaching change too. Is that hard for the players?

Matt:    Changes are always hard, but necessary sometimes. Coach Sullivan has been here 3 years, (cont)

(cont) as an assistant and this summer as Associate GM and players are very comfortable with him and the staff.

Good! When it comes to branding/mrktg, with many other professional sports teams here, how do you try to stand out?

Matt:    It can be tough to break through the noise, that’s for sure. We do what we can to keep a few things in mind: (cont)

1) do more with less 2) stay relevant 3) don’t be afraid to try different things 4) keep #lacrosse growing in MN.

In attending a game recently, it looks like it’s VERY popular with families. How do you target them so well?

Matt:    #Lax community has always shown great support- we work them into the game as much as possible.

You’ve seen the field pre-game- we couldn’t fit many more on it!

We also work to keep prices family friendly which is important to us.

What kinds of special packages and events do you have coming up for fans? Remind people to where you play. :)

Matt:    With 4 games left the rest of the season will be exciting @XcelEnergyCtr! (cont)

2 big promos coming up are #HeroesNight (3/30) http://mnswarm.com/heroes and #HiveCares (4/21) which benefits @RSCRF. (cont)

great ticket packs will be out soon too #45FamPack (4tix, 4dogs, 4sodas), and the Scarf Pack(tix & Swarm Scarf) (cont)

and of course pro-rated #SeasonTickets are still available, buy 2, get 2 half off – great deals all around

With the team having a good shot at making the playoffs, what’s the playoff structure to win the championship?

Matt:    #knockonwood we have a good shot at playoffs. It’s a 3 rnd single elim, with 8 teams fighting for the #ChampionsCup!

To close, when the next game for the fast moving and high-energy #Swarm?

Matt:    Big Game in Calgary tomorrow night (watch live @ 8pm on http://www.mnswarm.com) and we’re on the road until 3/30

Joel:    Thanks Matt for your time today and talking about the #Swarm.  Have a great day! :)

Matt:    Thanks for having usl. Don’t forget to check out http://swarmrewards.com a fun social media program.
