Kim Insley – KARE morning anchor

Posted by on Tuesday, 26 March, 2013

kim 2012 webGood morning everyone! Hopefully you are warm and inside. :) Today’s #MNMOtv guest is @KimInsley of @KARE11. Lets get started!

Kim:    Good morning!

You’ve probably been awake for a few hours already. Do you ever get used to do doing the morning news?

Kim:     You never get used to 1:45am. You just deal with it. (We all do when the alarm goes off, yes?)

I will say, the am news is the most fun– in the sense there is more freedom in a 2hr time frame than 30 min.

That’s true! To get to know you a little better, where did you grow up and what moved you to get into the news business?

Kim:    Grew up in Ashland, OR. Wonderful little town, beautiful area. College town and a theatre town. It is my roots.

I wanted to witness current events. Graduated in journalism – newspaper jobs were scarce, so I turned to TV

It’s been a great opportunity to satisfy my curiosity. I get to witness incredible things.

I bet you do! What areas of the country have you worked in and what’s one of your favorite stories that you’ve covered?

Kim:    Santa Barbara, CA, Portland, OR, Sacramento, CA and the beautiful state of Minnesota!

Fav stories are quirky. One was the 1989 SFO earthquake. Met an elderly woman w/ a 6ft crevice opened near her house

..her big concern was the squirrels had been injured. I like stories where you meet incredible folks of all stripes.

Real people stories off the beaten pat. Those are interesting. When did you come to @KARE11, and what roles have you had?

Kim:    1993 – so it’s been awhile. Job title has never changed. No resume padding for me! Duties have changed w/the business.

The web and social networking are now key to communicating w/”viewers”. We have new ways to move info.

It requires constant training in new tech. and also smart ways to do that. We have so many diff ways to tell a story

Getting info on air: iPhone pics and vid, Skype, Apple TV, Facetime, FTP. The days of driving video to station are gone.

How has the experience of interacting with viewers via social media been going for you? Have you made any friends?

Kim:    Actually, yes. One person has been an inspiration in fitness. Others have become resources for news and community

I don’t go meet folks for coffee, as you have to realized social networking is vast w/people who have many motives.

I need to set a good example for my kids! Still, social networking HUGE in responding to people, connecting

Gone are the days of the deadline being your airtime. The deadline now is as soon as you can confirm the information

With the time that you work, you have a unique schedule. What kinds of things do you like doing when you have time off?

Kim:    Downtime? Not w/kids! I do enjoy whatever workout time I can get. Lately reading by the fireplace. Cooking for sure!

I would love to travel more. I love taking my kids places we’ve never seen.

What are you currently reading, and what kinds of books do interest you? Have you heard of http://www.goodreads.com/?

Kim:    I just finished “Code Verity” — great spy novel in WWII era. Unpredictable. I have too many unfinished books!

Haven’t used http://goodreads.com  Will try! I liked “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed. Also “Under The Tuscan Sun Cookbook”

Have you read “The Swerve: How the World Became Modern” – I love history that takes a deeper look. Another perspective.

I haven’t. You mentioned that you liked to cook. What are your specialties, and where do you like to go when you eat out?

Kim:    Love making soup and pastas. I have a good rigatoni with italian sausage. I’m a Pinterest nut. Great things to try!

Places to eat– haven’t hit the new, hip places in the cities. I know. Sad me. We usually take the family out ..

so visits to Biaggi’s , Spasso. Splurge at Pittsburgh Blue. Will always love Broder’s in SW Mpls.

Joel:    You like your pastas. :) The time went by too quick today, but that’s for being a part of #MNMOtv and sharing some of your life!

Kim:    You are very welcome! Thank you and have a great day!

Faces of Minnesota – Rena Sarigianopoulos

Posted by on Thursday, 17 May, 2012

Rena Sarigianopoulos is a weekend anchor and a reporter for KARE 11 in the Minneapolis/St. Paul television market. She has been there for over 6 years and has become a fixture on their network. When she’s not in front of a camera, what kinds of things does she get involved with? What are some of her favorite sports, and if she could play one of them professionally, what position does she think she could play at? Finally, a few years ago, Rena had a run in with a professional golfer that you might have heard of, Tiger Woods.  What happened that triggered him to respond the way he did to her? Find out in this 3 part interview with her.

In part 1 or Rena’s interview, she talks about how she got interested in journalism, how she got to learn the business of covering and sharing the news, and shares how it is working with weekend co-anchor Eric Perkins.

In part 2 of Rena’s interview, she talks about her run in with Tiger Woods on a golf course, what she does locally to show support for different causes, what her running regiment is like and what she does with her time outside of her work.

In part 3 of her interview, Rena talks about her favorite sports to follow. What it takes to prep for anchor duties and the skill it takes to pronounce international names amongst athletes.

Twitterview with Lori Druskin Ryan

Posted by on Wednesday, 14 September, 2011

Hello everybody, and welcome to today’s Twitterview with @lryanis as my featured guest! Lets get rolling!

Lori:    Hi Joel.. so excited about this opportunity.

Q – #1    Lori, (@lryanis) for those that missed your video -  Lori where did you grow up and attend school?

Lori:    I grew up in Golden Valley, MN. Went to Robbinsdale Armstrong. Then spent 2 years at Boston U and then Madison, WI

Q – #2    What did you major in at Boston U and then at Madison WI? What moved you to take those courses?

Lori:    I started out in International Relations hoping to make the world a more peaceful place. Then switched to journalism…

I decided to move closer to home and took an interest in educating people through the media.

Q – #3    Where did your schooling in Journalism take you, and how did networking at a young age help you?

Lori:    In 1988 I got my first summer internship @Kare11– and it is funny how I found out about it

My montessori school teacher’s sister was a photographer at @Kare11 & remembered me…

So what I learned is you are never too young to start networking.

I spent 2 summers interning at @Kare11 before landing my first full time TV producing job in Wausau, Wisconsin.

From Wausau, I went to Fort Wayne, IN before coming home to work at @KSTP in ’92. Can’t believe it’s been almost 20 yrs

Q – #4    Was coming to MN and working here a MUST for you? Where did you go after @KSTP?

Lori:    It was awesome to be producing news in my hometown. I felt so much more connected to the stories…

I left @KSTP & went to @Kare11 in ’94. I was hired by my mentor from my intern days.

In 1997, I ended up at @MyFox9 (KMSP) working on a national show called Everyday Living with @randikayecnn

Q – #5    Any other stations that you worked at locally? How would you say Social Media has changed the scene?

Lori:    I’m lucky to have worked w/ some really passionate and talented folks ie: @TedCanova @andrewzimmern, @jasonmatheson

Stories are now breaking on Twitter. It’s crazy. I remember ripping AP wire & typing stories on a typewriter.

And virtually anyone can be a news gatherer these days. I uploaded some snow video to YouTube & it ended up on @GMA

I saw the first pictures of the N. Mpls Tornado on Twitter. People sharing news happening in their neighborhoods.

Social media also makes news much more interactive. You’re creating conversations with FB & Twitt not just informing

Q – #6    The news has changed! More about you. FAVORITE(S): Restaurant, store, neighborhood, hobby and recent blog or book.

Lori:    I’m training for my 1st marathon at the age of 43. So when I’m not working or driving kids around I’m @LifetimeLF SLP.

I also recently finished producing a kids yoga iPod/Ipad app with @sprstretchYoga — Coming soon to the apple store.

As for a favorite store.. It has to be the family biz @lendruskin — I spent the last 7 years helping the biz grow.

As for books, I am a huge Jack Reacher fan. I like to think about which actor would play him in a movie.

Q – #7    Lots going on! :) To close, to students in school taking Journalism, what would you recommend that they focus on?

Lori:    Interships are great. But even if you don’t have one right now, start a blog, start reporting on school & comm. events.

iPhones and Flipcams make it easy to practice news gathering & reporting every day. Try setting up a youtube channel.

Nothing like that existed 20 plus years ago when I was a student. Take advantage of the technology available to you.

@JoelECarlson:    Very good advice Lori! Thank you very much for your time and input today. All the best to you with your new journey!

Lori:    Thank you so much Joel!

Twitterview with Frank Vascellaro

Hello everyone! Welcome to this noontime Twitterview with my special guest, @FrankieVWCCO. Lets get things started!

Q – #1    So @FrankieVWCCO, when did you first know that you wanted to get into journalism? Did it come easy to you?

Frank:    No. I had another career as a stockbroker and didn’t get into TV until I was 27-28. Wish I would have read …

“what color is your parachute” years earlier. But it all worked out, just took a while. No regrets.

Q – #2    Where did you get your journalism training from and what was your first job working in news?

Frank:    I went to Columbia College in Chicago then an internship in Champaign, IL. and first TV gig was in Decatur IL.in 1992

Q – #3     Do you remember the first story that you covered or is there a memorable one from your 1st gig?

Frank:    Sure do. It was about a job fair and I did a stand up about the fact there were no TV jobs. Corny and took 17 takes.

most people need to start in smaller markets to get polished and comfortable. I sure did!!

I have an Emmy Award winning blooper real.

Q – #4    Needless to say, you’ve come a LONG way! :) So what steps did you take from there to end up at @wcco?

Frank:    Just kept working to get better and go to bigger markets. From reporter in Decatur to weekend anchor/reporter

then from Decatur to Peoria as 5,6,10 pm anchor, then KARE as morning and eventually evening anchor, then WCCO

Q – #5    Most people probably know that your co-anchor @wccoAmelia, is also your wife. How did you two meet?

Frank:    At a charity event in Nov. 1996. I am such a wimp that I sent my buddy in first

to talk to her to she if she was ‘cool’. He gave the tumbs up so I went over and said hello. What if he

had given her a bad report? Life is funny. thank God it worked out

Q – #6    For sure. How was it when you were going to work at @wcco with her. Was there a big discussion about it?

Frank:    Of course. Lots of discussion. It was much harder on her. She would tell you I’m a bit of a control freak.

But it worked out great. Certainly an initial change but actually lead to better communication.

Q – #7    Good! Lets shift gears now. You had some major surgery recently. What did you have done and how have you helped others?

Frank:    Hip replacement April 1st. Worked out great wish I would have done it sooner. Dozens of people asked about it….

..and I’m always willing to answer questions and try to help

Dr. Scott Anseth at Twin Cities Orthopedic was my surgeon and it took place at Abbot.

Q – #8    Now the #TweetFLOOD is going to hit you. :) How has your recovery been going after you had it done?

Frank:    Great! No pain any longer. In hospital 2 days on crutches for 4 weeks and now can do everything except for impact sports

Q – #9    Super! Now to your FAVORITE(S) – Restaurant, store, comfort food, hobby and recent book or movie.

Frank:    Bar LaGrassa, Buon Giorno, Broders, notice an Italian theme here? Grew up on and still eat mom’s pasta and meatballs

read all Vince flynn novels but many more periodicals than fiction. My sister just told me about book, Lone Survivor

hobbies are on hold w/ 3 kids but I love to fish and go to live rock-n-roll shows. U2, The Who.

@JoelECarlson:    Thank you VERY MUCH for taking some time for #jectv from your busy schedule! See you at 5,6 and 10pm tonight on @wcco.

Frank:    My pleasure, great questions and a lot of fun. Enjoy the perfect weather today.  Shower now and off to work.

@JoelECarlson:    I also love the segments with your mom and with @wccoRosen’s mom too! Hopefully we see more of them soon. :)

Twitterview with Liz Heincke

@JoelECarlson: Hello everyone, and welcome to today’s Twitterview with my guest @KitchPantrySci. Lets cook up some science in the kitchen!

Liz: Hi Joel. Excited for the Twitterview!

Q – #1    Lets learn a little about you. Where did you grow up, go to school, and what was your 1st job ever?

Liz: I grew up in the Little Apple- Manhattan, KS. My dad was a physics prof at Kansas State University.

I got my undergraduate degree at Luther College in Decorah, IA where I majored in art and minored in biology.

While working in a molecular microbiology research lab in Madison,I got my Masters Degree in Bacteriology from the Univ. of Wisconsin

My first job was working food service for a summer at Cal Berkley, where my mom managed one of the dining services.

Q – #2    Interesting. So how did you wind up in MN? Is the “feel” of MN similar to KS for you?

Liz: We ended up in MN because of my husband’s job, but he’s from here (Hopkins.) MN has a much different “feel” than Kansas.

I think I’ve completely lost my Kansas drawl at this point, but haven’t moved all the way to a “Fargo” accent.

Q – #3    LOL! Whew! When did you decide to start doing kitchen science work? What was your first experiment/project?

Liz: I started doing science at the kitchen table with my three kids and their friends as a way to keep them busy and entertained.

The challenge was to tailor experiments so a 3, 6 and 8 year old could all do them and I wouldn’t have 2 run out to buy supplies/kits

I think the 1st experiment we did was with magic markers.Draw a dot on a coffee filter w/ black pen, add water, watch colors separate!

Q – #4    Okay. Have you expanded what you do to others outside your family? What kinds of things have you done recently?

Liz: I do science with kids at preschools, @MidtownGlobal’s WeeWed and once a month I do science on @Kare11 Sunrise news with @kiminsley

I recently attended a #nasatweetup at Kennedy Space Center and am going to my son’s school to tell all the 4th graders about my trip!

Q – #5    How great for you! Taking a home idea and broadening it’s scope. Any blogs or books about your work?

Liz: I’m working on an app that should come out late this summer called kidscienceapp! I’m really excited about it!

You can also find all my experiments and several videos your kids can watch on my blog at http://kitchenpantryscientist.com.

Your kids can probably watch the experiment videos on my KitchenPantryScientist.com blog and tell YOU how to do them!

Q – #6    Awesome! More about YOU. Favorite(s): Restaurant, store, comfort food, person of inspiration.

Liz: Had a great meal at Il Gatto recently! Especially love our MN restaurants that use locally grown food, like Corner Table!

I’m addicted to the tapanade from @France44 lately too

Lately, I’m inspired by people like the artist Cezanne, who found their calling after they turned 30.

@JoelECarlson: Thanks for your time and comments today @KitchPantrySci. Have a great summer with your kids and keep making science fun!

Liz: Thanks @JoelECarlson for Twitterviewing me! It was fun!

Twitterview with Shayne Wells

Posted by on Wednesday, 9 March, 2011

@JoelECarlson – Hello everyone, and welcome to the Twitterview of upbeat and energetic reporter @ShayneWellsMSP. Lets get to Tweet’n!

Shayne: let’s do this (said energetically, haha)…

Q – #1    So @ShayneWellsMSP, you’ve lived primarily on the West Coast. How are you adapting to the Midwest?

Shayne: Not going to lie, it’s been a challenge. I’ve never lived anywhere with humidity, tornadoes and temps that drop to -15.

On the other hand, it’s toughened me up.

Q – #2    What are some things that stand out to you in the Midwest, besides the weather, that are different from the W coast?

Shayne: I grew up eating casseroles, had never even heard of a hot dish, ha.

But really, the Midwest has a lot of Midwest specific foods (we didn’t really have those growing up in WA).

I’ve lived in 5 states now and this was by far the hardest to make friends, but once you’re in, you’re in, loyalty is big here.

I do love how the weather doesn’t intimidate people from going out (like it did in CA).

Q – #3    Lots of “hearty stock” in MN. :)  Lets shift gears. Explain a little bit about how you got interested in entertainment reporting?

Shayne: I really have done it all. I started out doing weekend weather in CO, anchoring in ID, and reporting in CA.

Doing it all made me realize hard news is not me. I’m bubbly, and I love to have fun. Ent. reporting was just a better fit for me

Though I also love sports and I can’t say I won’t be making that shift in the future!

Q – #4    So maybe @ShayneWellsMSP on @ESPN?  What kind of topics do you cover with @KARE11 and @MetroMixTC?

Shayne: Would love to cover college football! @ESPN, call me ;-)

At @kare11 and @MetromixTC I cover all things fun, restaurants, music, celebrities, fashion, bars. Tough job, someone’s got to do it

Q – #5    Variety is good! Now to your FAVORITES: Restaurant, store, winter activity, comfort food & recent guest or event.

Shayne: Fave restaurant: Bryant Lake Bowl (great breakfast and grilled cheese), store: Nordstrom/Anthropologie, Winter Activity:snowmobiling

Fave comfort food: biscuits & gravy (still trying to find the Twin Cities best, Mill City Café is a contender)

Fave recent guest: Topher Grace or @ModSun (Bloomington rapper), fave event: Pub & Putt (so fun).

Q – #6    Good answers. Has Social Media had any effect on how you do your job? Who does your video and editing?

Shayne: When I started in news, there was no Twitter and Facebook wasn’t being utilized by anyone other than college kids.

Social media has changed things quite a bit, in a good way. Makes finding stories and connecting with people much easier.

I shoot, write and edit all my own stories.

Q – #7    @ShayneWellsMSP is a 1-woman crew! Not an easy task. To end, what advice would you share with those looking into your field of work?

Shayne: It’s not glamorous, or easy, but it is rewarding. The thing that’s helped me the most is a willingness to take risks

I believe if you want something bad enough you can make it happen.

thanks for having me!

@JoelECarlson – Thank You! Have a great day and enjoy the fresh snow. :)

Twitterview with Katie Schutrop

Posted by on Monday, 10 January, 2011

@JoelECarlson – Happy Monday to everyone! Today’s Twitterview is with @kshoop of @MetromixTC, so lets start this party!

@kshoop - Ready to go!

Q – #1    So @kshoop, where did you grow up, where did you go to college, and what local social-media/news/blogger helped you?

A: Born and raised in St. Louis Park (Go Orioles!) and proud @MarquetteU alum…

Actually, Mr. @DerushaJ played a part in me choosing @MarquetteU. Met w/ him (a fellow alum) as a HS senior for coffee

…where he gave me all the ins and outs of the College of Comm and what to do in MKE. Thanks @derushaj! cc @marquetteu

Q – #2    Good to get insights from people! So @kshoop what did you take at @marquetteu for courses? What do you do at @metromixTC?

A: Took PR & marketing courses for my major. Also a handful of dance classes (favorite course = African dance)

At @MetromixTC I am the marketing & social media coordinator. Lots of event & content planning & managing our SM sites

Q- #3    What kinds of things do you feature with @MetroMixTC, and who are your target audience?

A: Metromix is @kare11′s arts & entertainment site. So any happenings around the cities, restaurant/concert reviews…

event photos, and a ton of other fun stuff in between. Our audience tends to focus around the 21-35 demo

Q – #4    Cool! Now in your “spare time”, you also operate a MeetUp group as well. What is the group and what’s the focus of it?

A: I organize @YPCTC which is a monthly networking group aimed at those starting out in the comm industry

The idea is to allow others in similar stages of their careers to meet, network & be a resource to one another

This month marks @YPCTC’s 1 year anniversary which is crazy to me. I’ve met some really great ppl through the events

Q – #5    Can you share any plans or ideas for upcoming @YPCTC events?

A: Yes! The next @YPCTC will be at @Trygs on Wed., January 26 from 5:30 – 8. Planning on posting the FB event 2day.

Q – #6    Lets shift gears. How long have you been using Social Media personally, and what’s your favorite platform?

A: I had a blog w/ a friend in HS. I started using FB when it was “The Facebook” in 2004. So a while!

Favorite platform? Facebook for personal use, Twitter for networking & Foursquare for stalking all of my crushes…

…JK on the stalking part (kind of ;) ) But I love foursquare for getting tips when I’m out and about

Q – #7    Casual stalking huh? :) So do you have any unique badges? Do you contribute tips on @Foursquare?

A: Unique badges? I got a Real Housewives badge once. Maybe it’s foreshadowing? I do contribute tips…the best part!

Metromix offers tips on Foursquare that we help contribute to as well. Follow us at foursquare.com/metromix

Q – #8    FAVORITES Question: Restaurant, store (1 brick/mortar & 1 online), winter activity and Twin Cities neighborhood.

A: Restaurant? Hard to say. I heart Mexican so I’ll go with Pepitos in Minneapolis. Yum!

Store: @clicherocks & LEN Druskin Outlet. Online: Probably ModCloth.com

Winter activity: Going to/watching hockey…college, high school & (hopefully for the 1st time this year) the @mnwild

Neighborhood: I’m an Uptown girl. That one’s easy.

Q – #9    Sure! Do you have any personal or professional goals that you’re targeting for this year?

A: One professional is to help bring @MetromixTC’s & @kare11′s SM presence to the next level. Fun projects in the works!

A personal goal is to find more of a balance between work & personal life. A tough task when so much of what I do relates to

…what I love to do outside of the office.

Q – #10    To end today @kshoop, what mantra or job-searching advice would you care to share with those following today?

A: Since I’ve been little I’ve been told you get what you pay for which has held true for me in job searching and reaching

all my other personal goals.

@JoelECarlson – Nice. Thank you @kshoop for your time today, and best wishes with your new job and the @YPCTC group!

@kshoop – Thanks much!
