Science Museum of Minnesota – Mike Day

Posted by on Friday, 4 May, 2012

Welcome everyone! Today’s @MNMOmag Twitterview is with Mike Day, Sr. VP at the @sciencemuseumMN. Lots of learning to do!

Mike:    Very excited to do a Twitterview!

To start off with. How long has the museum been around, and how long has it been in it’s current location?

Mike:    The Science Museum was founded in 1907 (105 yrs old) as the Saint Paul Institute of Science and Letters.

We opened the current, state-of-the-art museum facility in 1999.

Wow,! Time flies. In addition to the Pirates exhibit, what other things can people see and so at the museum?

Mike:    The #Omnitheater is showing the film Under the Sea and 8 acres of indoor science fun.

What are the hours at the museum for visitors to come and what is the cost to them?

Mike:    I am really enjoying this @JoelECarlson Great questions! http://t.co/ewdXiFRf

Our hours & ticket prices vary so we recommend visiting http://t.co/mcLjl9yx & http://t.co/XXJxRTO8 to buy tickets to #MNpirates

The best deal for admission is to be a members of the museum http://t.co/DWx4lM30 #MNMOtv #MNpirates

If you plan on visiting #MNpirates, take advantage of less crowding in the exhibition during the weekdays or Thurs/ Fri p.m.

Lets get to the “Real Pirates” exhibit. What’s the process in getting a special exhibit like this to come to MN?

Mike:    If you plan on visiting #MNpirates, take advantage of less crowding in the exhibition during the weekdays or Thurs/ Fri p.m.

We are always working to bring unique exhibits. We are on the “A-list” for our ability to care for & display important artifacts.

An “A-List” museum. That’s great! What are some of the special pieces in the exhibit that people should look for?

Mike:    Thousands of gold and silver coins last touched by pirates. Cannons, pistols, swords and best of all- REAL PIRATES

We have a cadre of actors who have researched actual pirates, their dress & their language & assume their persona in the #MNpirates

Sounds like some great planning was done! :) How long should people plan on average to go through the exhibit?

Mike:    Most people spend 90 min to 2 hrs but totally depends on how much time you want to spend immersing yourself in the #MNpirates

Plus, spending an hour to see Under the Sea in the #Omnitheater of course

What’s the story behind the #MNpirates exhibit, and is it kid-friendly for say toddlers and young children?

Mike:    Is a fun exhibit for the whole family. We see all ages fascinated by this from preschoolers on up.

Families report their 3, 4 & 5 year-olds LOVE #MNpirates, meeting the real pirates & watching the Under the Sea #Omnitheater film

Good to know. What parts of the world were the various pieces on display discovered?

Mike:    #MNpirates artifacts include art from West Africa, gold from Bolivia and coins from all over the old and new world.

The ship was built in London, traveled through Caribbean and Atlantic ocean.

Interesting. What are some of the myths that this exhibit helps to overcome?

Mike:    This is not pirate movie fantasy. It’s very authentic & fascinating stories & stuff from the real pirates of the golden age of piracy

Pirate myths: Walking the plank. First featured in the ‘Peter Pan’ play.

Pirate facts: Capt. as a dictator?! No way, pirates actually operated on a fairly democratic system of government.

Sounds like a great exhibit that everyone should see. To close, how long is it there until?

Mike:    Is a must-see. It’s at the museum through Labor Day, Sept. 3. Save time, reserve at http://ow.ly/9vK1j

Joel:    Good to know! Thank you very much for your time and for all that you shared today on #MNMOtv. Have a great day!

Mike:    Thanks @JoelECarlson. You too and visit us again!

LAND OF 10,000 EATS – Yogurt Lab

Posted by on Wednesday, 2 May, 2012

It’s been a number of years since I’ve had a frozen yogurt with anything on it. I just haven’t had a craving for it, and I haven’t missed it much either. Lately though, with all of the frozen yogurt shops popping up all over the Twin Cities, I decided that I would try one of them and find out what they’re doing to create interest in their frozen treat. My journey took me to the northwest corner of Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis, to the Yogurt Lab. (FYI – They just announced that they will be opening up another location in the 50th and France neighborhood.)

So what to try? Would I try one of their more exotic flavored yogurts, or would I go with the standard vanilla yogurt and then and pile on the toppings? I did a little bit of both. I went with vanilla, but not plain vanilla yogurt, I tried the Tahitian Vanilla. Then I added some blueberries, kiwi, granola, cherries, Reese’s pieces, brownie bites and few other sweet toppings. It was very good and very filling! I’ll have to make a return visit to try out some of their other flavors of yogurt and experiment, as scientists do when they’re in their lab, and make some other concoctions of flavors, textures and tastes. :)

So to sum up, I would definitely go again. I’d imagine as the temperatures get higher in the Twin Cities, and they will, this place is going to be packed with people after going for a run, ride or walk around Lake Calhoun, as well as those who drive by while cruising down Excelsior Blvd on a great Spring or Summer day. To learn more about Yogurt Lab, be sure to check out this video tour.

Tara Hunnewell – Actress, Singer and Entrepreneur

Posted by on Friday, 27 April, 2012

Good afternoon everybody! :) Welcome to the #jectv Twitterview of actress/singer/host @THunnewell (Tara Hunnewell). On with the show!

Tara:    Thanks Joel!! Great to be here.

To start off with Tara. Tell us a little bit about where you grew and what what you’re interests were as a kid/teenager.

Tara:    Grew up in Cape Cod. My first love.. believe it or not was playing the trumpet! I was always a dancer from the age of 2

Also always singing/performing for my family, making costumes from a box of old dresses and jewelry my mother gave me.

After you got out of HS, what course did you take in your life?

Tara:    I started training to be classical a singer in highschool, attended the prestigious Tanglewood Institute Opera Program

After HS I decided to move to the big city to continue my training as an actress and a singer. #NYC was calling me!

I received my BFA in acting with a minor in business and philosophy at Marymount Manhattan College.

Singer AND actress. How long did you get training, and were there times that you just wanted to quit?

Tara:    I have been training my whole life and continue to train. I think it is important to always continue to grow and learn.

Yes, there are times when you want to throw the towel in.. we all encounter road blocks along the way. This is life.

Quitting was never an option. I was driven to learn about the business of show business.

Good attitude! So when did you get you’re first “break” in being able to use your talents?

Tara:    Hard to determine my first big ‘break’.. As an artist, we are so funny.. the big ‘break’ is always around the corner

There have been many landmarks in my life that have given me opportunities to grow, as an artist and as a person.

Example, my first audition after I graduated was for ‘The Ohmies’ a musical I spent several years traveling with.

When I moved to LA, the first film I acted in, ‘Wonderland Park’, led to many amazing creative collaborations

I wrote a song ‘I Believe in Love’ which led me to Airline Ambassadors, an amazing charity org I continue to support.

I see. Who are some people that you’ve been able to work with that some following us might know?

Tara:    I have been very fortunate to have worked with many incredible people, in my humanitarian work as well as creative.

I want to ask this about you, how have you been able to use Social Media for good purposes?

Tara:    Hugely important! We are now able to create awareness and start conversations about important issues.

I am working right now on a startup called #TradeUp which is the first real time game with real goods.

We are incorporating a charity angle with this, utilizing social media, gaming, trading and giving back.

Did we lose you Tara? What are some events/shows that you’ve been able to host in your career?

Tara:    I often host w @realtvfilms Toyota Grand Prix, LA Comedy Shorts Film Fest, and will be at Cannes next month

Tara, #TradeUp sounds like a GREAT idea! Anytime soon that a prototype might be seen?

Tara:    Yes! Stay tuned. We will be in Beta soon. People can apply to be part of our premiere round of trading.

Imagine.. You can trade a paper clip to a car in almost no time!

Joel:    Thank you very much Tara for sharing some of your life and your #TradeUp idea. I hope that it works out for you!

Tara:    Thank You!! It’s been a pleasure. :)
