Twitterview with David Alston

Posted by on Wednesday, 20 April, 2011

@JoelECarlson: Hello everyone, and welcome to today’s Twitterview of @DavidAlston, the CMO of @Radian6. Lets get started!

David: Sounds like a plan Joel – happy to participate

Q – #1    So @davidalston, lets get to know you a bit. Where did you grow up, what kind of schooling did you get and what was your 1st job?

David: I grew up in New Brunswick (Canada), I went to @Acadiau for my BBA and started first job at NBTel as a Product Mgr.

NBTel was the local provincial phone company with a great entrepreneurial spirit. Great basis for my thinking today

Q – #2    What steps/jumps did you take from NBTel to get to be the CMO of @Radian6?

David: My roles at NBTel were a mix of marketing/product/tech and customers which are all my fave things

NBTel also incubated some start ups and I gravitated to them working in two of them, one which eventually IPO’d

It was during this startup experience that I met a number of the team I work with today at @radian6 -

Q – #3    I see. Could you explain what your role is with @Radian6 as the CMO? What kinds of projects are you involved with?

David: Sure, in the beginning I was a department of one but over the last 3.5 years many rockstars have joined the team

We took the approach of using listening to our community and creating content they wanted as a way to build our brand

With an extended marketing/community team of around 15 my role is really one of collaborating on directions to take.

I spend a lot time with customers, members of the community, bloggers etc.. Its relationships that underpin our brand

Q – #4    Now for the “elephant in the room”. It was announced in March that @salesforce is buying @Radian6. How are you affected?

David: Affected only in a great way.Radian6 will be operating as an independent unit. They recognize what a great team we have

They have a tremendous entrepreneurial culture & people I’ve met r great. We are looking forward to gr8 things together

Q – #5    Super! Many people talk about @Radian6 as a very good analytical tool. How is it going to continue to grow?

David: Our recent announcements at #social2011 can give u a flavor. More mobile. More Insights from the data. More integration

Around our Insights platform alone you can now uncover “meaning” in the data gathered, semantic web style

And on integrations social connects to all parts of the enterprise, using the voice of the customer to drive strategy

Q – #6    Good to know! I see that you have a blog – http://communityinstinct.com/, how long have you had it?

David: Ah my blog, kinda embarrassed that it’s so neglected. I generally spend time on Twitter, Linkedin & Facebook

I know to really blog you need to dedicate time to it & the readers there. Someday I keep telling myself :)

I’ve had it/and predecessor Tweetpr for about 3.5 years. I use it mostly for long form thoughts & ideas

Q – #7    Only so many hours in a day right? :) More about you. FAVORITE(S): Restaurant, store, comfort food, recent book & hobby.

David: Indeed :) Hmm, fave store/flyer is @futureshop (Canada’s BestBuy) because of all the electronic toys :)

Fave book of all time is probably The Cluetrain Manifesto for bus books and I like the Dan Brown genre for pleasure

My last remaining hobby is amateur photography http://rad6.ly/hLxBP5 I love to shoot while on the road

Comfort food would be anything my doctor would probably tell me to avoid :)

Q – #8    Fun! I see pics of @MarketingProfs. I have a Twitterview with her in the near future! Any goals for you for this year?

David: @MarketingProfs (Ann) is a great person – you’ll enjoy the Twitterview with her

I’m definitely looking forward to the adventure ahead this year and onward. The acquisition has added fuel to the fire

The social space is still in it’s early days and their is so much as a community we’ll continue to learn together

These are exciting times we all live in. Social is going to have a bigger impact on biz that mass media did.

@JoelECarlson: It certainly seems to be! Thanks for your time and sharing some great comments today @davidalston. Have a great day doing fun work!

David: It’s been fun. Thanks for all the questions. Have a great one as well

This article printed Nov. ’05 http://bit.ly/55ztoH at Northwestern Univ…as Social Media emerged I was in it already..same strategy

“Same Business Strategy just modern tools” ..since the 80′s I always wanted people to talk about my stuff..

Just like a telephone I realized I need to communicate w customers w the same tools they use to communicate…thus Social Media

In ’98 I helped launch online ordering during a time when u could mostly just order a Book online.-always been ahead of the game

Today the “Mind of Ramon” and the passion of #RamonWOW has me planning stuff NASA has not thought of

The reason a mobile phone b/c ppl share photos and videos and the mobile allows me 2 make it happen in Real Time

When I 1st started on FB in ’05 and I did not have a .edu email address photos helped me create convo where I had no access

some people might say “What good is a photo or video if I cant share it”..this is b/c we r not running to print the photos like B4

The Mobile Phone is the Social Media traffic cop: it directs where you want your content to go

Posted by on Wednesday, 13 April, 2011

@JoelECarlson: Hello everyone! Welcome to my Twitterview today with the slightly waterlogged @wcco reporter @rachel_slavik. Lets begin.

Rachel: hi I’m here and ready when you are

Q – #1    So @rachel_slavik, share with us where you grew up, where you went to High School and what you did after you graduated.

Rachel: hi I grew up in Mound, MN, and went to Mound Westonka High School. I spent one year at UWSP then

transferred to UW-Madison. Go Badgers!

hi spent time in Duluth, Louisiana, now I’m back home and happy to be at WCCO

Q – #2    I see. So what did you major in at UW-Madison, and then what was your first job out of college?

Rachel: I majored in journalism. My first job was in Duluth at KBJR. Spent three years there, had a g8 time

Q – #3    What kind of work did you do for KBJR? After that, did you come to ‘cco next? How long have you bee with ‘cco now?

Rachel: I was the weekend anchor/reporter. Then, I moved to Baton Rouge, LA where I was the morning anchor for 3 yrs. Been at

Been at wcco since Oct 2010.

Q – #4    Lots of experience! Did you always want to be a journalist when you were growing up? Any good mentors along the way?

Rachel: I don’t have the “always dreamed of being a reporter” story. I fell into journalism because I needed to pick a major

at the end of freshman year. I was lucky and found my calling. Boyd Huppert has really guided me through the years

Q – #5    Good for you, and you get to work in your home state as well. Do you miss anchoring or do you prefer reporting?

Rachel: Thanks! I love reporting. Anchoring is such a different challenge, but I’ve been lucky enough to get a mix of both

Q – #6    You’ve been reporting in the Fargo ND area. Have you personally seen flooding like that before? How are the people?

Rachel: Never. I was shocked by how everyone handled the flooding up there. No panic, which is how I would have reacted

everyone just worked together and helped out their neighbors to keep homes dry. Everyone was so kind up there too

Q – #7    It looks bad for sure. Hopefully it eases up soon! :) Your favorites(s): Restaurant, store, comfort food & hobby.

Rachel: I love Melting Pot and this sushi restaurant called Kobe. Comfort food has to be the greasy stuff, chips, fries, pizza

and I’m a runner/rollerblader. I always run one of Grandma’s Marathon races in June. This year it’s the half.

don’t really have a fav store, but I spend a lot of time in pet stores buying toys. I spoil my dog, Butters.

Q – #8    I’d assume then that Butters goes with you on your runs? What breed is your dog?

Rachel: I wish! No, he’s a miniature dachshund. His little legs can’t handle running with me

@JoelECarlson: I understand! :) Well this marks the end of our Twitterview @rachel_slavik. Thanks for your time and comments. See you on @wcco!

Rachel: Thank you for having me! This was my first Twitterview. :)

Q – #1    With today being Draft-Day for the @wnba, lets talk about that a little first. What are the players thinking about?

Candice: Draft-Day is always exciting for the plyrs! We’re just like every1 else, wondering who’s going where and in what order

Q – #2    With so much of a players life planned out up until the point of Draft-Day, is there some anxiety involved?

Candice: Definitely a lot of anxiety for the draftees, but I honestly think there’s more excitement for a new start

Candice: I was feeling everything on Draft-Day, and yes I def had a feeling I would be in MN

Q – #4    With the @minnesotalynx having the No.1 & 4 picks, do you have anybody in particular you’d like to see on the team?

Candice: I think everyone’s excited ab the #1 pick! We all know who that is…& I’ll be excited ab whoever else we bring in!

Q – #5    Great! Now last season you were injured. How is your health now and what are your expectations for yourself & team?

Candice: My expectations for myself is just a full healthy season. As long as I’m healthy I can do major damage….

Q – #6    That would be great for #MN! You’ve played in the @wnba for a little while. Who do you like playing against?

Candice: That’s hard! I honestly love playing against everyone! #competitive & I esp love playing in the Staples Center

Twitterivew with Laura Bonicelli

Posted by on Friday, 8 April, 2011

@JoelECarlson: Hello everyone, and welcome to this weeks Food-Friday Twitterview with my guest @solobybonicelli. Set your timer to 1hr and lets go!

Laura: Hi Joel! Very glad to be here! Great way to end the week.

Q – #1    Hi Laura! So tell us a little bit about your background. You studied music at the UofMN and now do food. Why switch?

Laura: Music (singing) was an early career turned hobby. To make a living, I’ve produced still photo shoots 4 years – often working w/

major food companies and magazines. I decided it was time to do something with all of that experience and offer the quality and

style of food that I love to prepare and eat to other people.

Q – #2    I see. So what made you start @solobybonicelli instead of say working in a restaurant or having a food truck?

Laura: The concept developed when I was working with my partner (life and biz) @mlafavor on the content of what I intended to become my first

cookbook. I was writing recipes, we were testing, and we were shooting the results. I had a friend who was going through a lot of

she wasn’t eating well and frankly I hate wasting food. I made the packages really fun in an effort to cheer her up and her reaction

was so positive I started doing similar things for other friends – always packaged for the individual – so a little different than

dropping off a casserole. It dawned on me that I might have a business concept so I researched similar concepts on the coasts. I

found that there were many diets – but nothing based on great recipes #local #organic ingredients. So – I got serious about it.

I’d love to have a food truck BTW. I already have the food planned! A restaurant – not so much. #jectv But you never know:-)

Q – #3    Great concept! So how long have you been doing @solobybonicelli? What kind of ordering plans do you have available for the public?

Laura: I’m coming up on 2 years in May – with 2 years of testing prior to that. Lots of plans and lots of ways to customize. When I

started I thought I’d offer 3 plans – I now have over 12 – everything from 3 days of everything an individual eats to a month to

on going. I also do several dinner 4 2 plans and special “friend in need” and “new baby” packages. But the truth is the core of

on going. I also do several dinner 4 2 plans and special “friend in need” and “new baby” packages. But the truth is the core of

I’ve had to adapt to gluten issues, salt issues, meat restrictions – etc. I don’t consider myself a “personal chef” but my business

is very personal. I am grateful though because I learn more and more every day and aside from the pleasure I get from knowing that

people love my food, I am improving their health and well being

Q – #4    How rewarding. Would you say you have a certain type or style of cooking? Give some examples of things you’ve made.

Laura: This is a great question. I grew up on the MN Iron Range (Chisholm) in a largely Italian / Eastern European population. The food was

fabulous! I thought it all was Italian – which it wasn’t. So – making pasta with my grandmother and eating polenta and gnocchi

certainly informed me at an early age. That being said, once I started traveling and being exposed to many other foods I kind of

became obsessed. I pretty much try to make anything that interests me and if I like it- I keep working with it until I get a body of

recipes that I find I want to make over and over. Italian food always grounds me and will be my first love – but I’ve been known to

serve Vindaloo on Christmas day. I just can’t get over those Indian spices. Now that’s Christmas! I try to incorporate this kind

of variety into what I deliver (also when I cater). I want people to look forward to getting up in the morning.

Oh – I should mention that working in photography gave me a real appreciation of the visual aspects of food. I love a great looking

plate with lots of color and texture.

Just thinking I didn’t really answer your question about what might be on a delivery – next week I’m making a Vegetable Terrine w/

Basil Sauce – A Spinach and Leek Frittata – Veggie Chili – Several Salad – My Solo Granola with Greek Yogurt and more.

Q – #5    So what’s the website people can go to in order to see what you offer? What areas will you deliver to?

Laura: The website is solobybonicelli.com and we cover the Twin Cities and suburbs.. We charge an additional fee if it’s outside of

that or we can also ship overnight

Q – #6    Lets focus a bit on you now Laura. FAVORITE(S): Restaurant, store, comfort food, spice or seasoning, Nat’l chef.

Laura: Restaurant has always been Lucias. I love a lot of other ones too – but the quality and simplicity and European(ness) have

drawn me in again and again. Comfort food – I’d say simple potato gnocchi. Spice – right now fennel pollen – that could change by

next week – I tend to love whatever I’m working with at the time. Chef’s – oh – that’s a tough one. I ‘m going to give you a few….

next week – I tend to love whatever I’m working with at the time. Chef’s – oh – that’s a tough one. I ‘m going to give you a few….

Jamie Oliver , Mario Batali, “Thomas Keller, and Nobu. That’s really just a start. #jectv It’s a great time for food – and they

put out great work.

@JoelECarlson: Thank you so much for your time and sharing some of your life on #jectv today @solobybonicelli. Have a great weekend and Bon Appetit!

@solobybonicelli: Thank you – this was really fun and you have a great weekend too. Ciao!
