Twitterview (2.0) with Meghan Wilker

@JoelECarlson – Welcome everyone to today’s Twitterview 2.0 with tech/humorist and 1/2 of the @GeekGirlsGuide duo @irishgirl as today’s guest.

@irishgirl – I’ve never been called a humorist before, but if it means you think I’m funny I’ll take it! :)

Q – #1    So @irishgirl, lets first talk about your application with @nylons to the #SXSW event. What brought about the thought to apply?

A: Well, @Nylons called me and said, “Guess what I did?”

I’d love to say we were really strategic about it, but it was a whim. And we believe strongly in the topic.

With @geekgirlsguide, we just have a ton of passion and we like talking to as many people as possible.

Q – #2    So what is the application process like? How long was the “open voting” for approval? Still in the running?

A: We filled out an online app in July. The judges reviewed the apps and decided which ones went up for public vote.

Public voting was from 8/11-8/27. That accounts for 30% of your score (the initial judging was 40%).

Final judging (which is happening now) is the last 40%. They announced the first round last month (we weren’t in it).

But the second round will be announced this Monday. Fingers crossed!

We’ve been on their list of “trending” ideas (http://ow.ly/354Sb) which seems like a good sign, but who knows?

The page I just linked to: one minute we’re at the top, and the next we’re at the bottom. I can’t tell what it means!

Q – #3    Hopefully that works out for you and @Nylons! :) Now you get paid to blog a lot right? :) j/k  How’s work been lately?

A: Work has been very busy, in a good way. We have launched lots of cool stuff lately! Wanna see some of it?

@JoelECarlson – @irishgirl Sure, Tweet some links of @Clockwork_Tweet’s recent activity.

We launched @GirlScoutsRV: http://www.girlscoutsrv.org/ – I’m really proud of that one. cc: @bradbaso, @m3ggiesue

We also launched @UnitedWayTC at https://www.unitedwaytwincities.org/ – they are a great client and I love the site!

We also – for fun on a Lab Day – built an app called Slydology. Just a fun, silly (free) game – for iPhone & Android.

And lots of others: helped Capella with an iPhone app for students, new site for United Bankers’ Bank…fun to be busy!

Q – #4    Fun! Now you also have a @GeekGirlsGuide Social Media 101 session for next WED planned. Who are you targeting w/that?

A: That 101 session is for people who look at social media and either feel overwhelmed, skeptical, or think,…

There are still a large number of people who don’t really “get it” – especially how it can be used professionally.

The best summary of their attitude is, “I don’t care what anyone had for lunch.” We try to address that skepticism.

We have no vested interest in whether or not they do anything with social media, but are passionate about educating.

The point is: it’s fine to reject something if it’s not for you, but at least make sure you know what you’re rejecting.

Q – #5    Good idea! Got a link for people to sign up? On the personal side…any new stores or restaurants that you’ve tried?

A: More info on 11/10 workshop here – http://ow.ly/355MS I should also mention that it’s the first in a series.

Different folks at #clockwork will do workshops on all kinds of stuff both tech-related and not. So watch for those!

As for new stores/restaurants: I am the boringest loser ever. I did finally make it to Haute Dish, which was awesome!

I’m WAY more into movies and books than restaurants or stores!

Q – #6    1 more question, and then I’ll open it up to anyone following on #jectv to ask you a final question. OK?

A: Cool. Hit me.

Q – #7    @irishgirl You’re a BIG advocate of #GTD and speak about it. What would you say is the biggest reason to apply it?

@JoelECarlson – FYI – #GTD (Get Things Done)

A: To reduce stress by being productive about things you really care about instead of busy work and emergencies.

@JoelECarlson – Wonderful! :) Now 1 question from anyone following now on #jectv, directed to @irishgirl? I’ll choose which one she answers? Anyone?

@irishgirl – *crickets*

In case no questions come in, I’m going to spout off about awesome things I think people should know about.

@KDFindley – Favorite book @irishgirl has read recently. Business and/or pleasure.

@irishgirl – Awesome thing 1: Sherlock on @PBS. Completely awesome, stars Martin Freeman from the BBC version of The Office.

@JoelECarlson – Go ahead and answer @KDFindley’s question on books.

@irishgirl – Awesome thing 2: The Passage by Justin Cronin. Long book, but really good. Post-apocalyptic & unusual vampire tale.

I love the one I just mentioned – The Passage. Last night finished book 2 of the Hunger Games trilogy. I’m loving those.

I’ve wanted to check out #booksandbars for a while, and on 11/23 they’re talking Hunger Games. http://booksandbars.com/

@JoelECarlson – Agreed! Sherlock is a VERY good series on Sunday’s on @TPT / @PBS

@JoelECarlson – Thank you so much for your sharing some of your life online today. Have a great weekend @irishgirl.

@irishgirl – Thanks, Joel! And thanks to anyone who listened to me. Enjoy the weekend. Go read a good book!

  1. For implementing GTD you can use this web-based application:

    Gtdagenda.com

    You can use it to manage your goals, projects and tasks, set next actions and contexts, use checklists, schedules and a calendar.
    Comes with a mobile version too, and with an Android app.
