Twitterview (2.0) with Phil Wilson

Posted by on Friday, 15 October, 2010

@JoelECarlson – Hello everyone, and welcome to the Twitterview 2.0 of @philson. Just didn’t learn enough about him from his 1st one. :)  Lets begin!

@philson – I’m giddy with anticipation..I’m honored.

Q – #1    So @philson, from a professional level, how has your summer been? (events, projects, etc.)

A: It’s been kind of a crazy summer. Lately, I’ve been doing smaller projects for a lot of different folks. Learning as well.

@minnov8 continues to let me learn more about the social and tech community. All good stuff and only a few gripes, go figure.

Q – #2    Got to meet @sborsch of @minnov8 the other day. Smart guy! What was your role at the #MIMASummit, and your impression of it?

A: I totally dug the MIMA Summit this year. Amazing what Wifi can do for your demeanor. @minnov8 was liveblogging the entire @mimasummit

I spent most of my time in a room interviewing the speakers and panelists for the live stream. I’m hopeful that video will be posted soon.

One of the highlights was hanging our with @garyvee. I shot some of my own video and will be using that on @remaincomm soon.

My disappointment at @mimsummit was not getting to spend time talking with @xenijardin. I’m a fan & was hoping she’d sign my breast.

Q – #3    Great, I caught a few of them live! In Social Media, #NewTwitter and FB-Groups have been launched. Any opinions on them?

A: Ahh…#newtwitter…I supposedly have it but my Firefox/MacBook Pro config doesn’t like it…I get a blank screen.

I’ve always used @tweetdeck so I’ll stick with that. FB-Groups could suffer from the same fate as Google Wave. Is there a need?

More on FB-Groups…what FB has going for it is a stronger group culture. We have to be careful about getting ahead of user needs though.

Things like wave and fb-groups all have a place in the digital and Social future. Sometimes innovation may take awhile to be adopted.

Q – #4    It seems like their is some copying/competition amongst @Google, @Twitter, @Facebook & #LinkedIn. What’s your favorite?

A: Copying…the heck you say? I think so many of the services are good for different voices. That’s good. @linkedIn is not @facebook

I don’t have a favorite but I seem to be on facebook more lately. Twitter is a great tool for finding info and the DM is big for me.

@philson – BTW, the @apstylebook tells me I can now use moviegoer, filmgoer, and theatergoer. Finally, I can get some sleep (bedgoer?)

Q – #5    Interesting. On the personal side, did you get to travel some during the Summer/Fall seasons at all?

A: We did the MN required “trip up north” to a cabin and lake. State law says you make that trip once every 5 yrs or move out, right?

We actually go out and travel more than most know…I rarely announce being out on @foursquare and such. I think that’s still TMI

Speaking of @foursquare, I think location based Social Media needs to be more about benefits. We have many opportunities there.

Q – #6    Right! :) I wonder at what longitude in MN do people no longer say “going up North”? Are you a hiker, hunter or reader?

A: I’m more of an naturalist I guess. I love the overall beauty of where we live. I don’t hunt. I just can’t pull off blaze orange.

Q – #7    LOL! (re:orange) So to end today, what would you encourage new adapters/users of Social Media to do?

A: That’s easy…relax! I started @Remaincomm with that very attitude. Using all these tools to communicate are not required.

Try things and commit to what works for you, what accomplishes your goal. Keep expectations in line with how “new” a service is.

@JoelECarlson – VERY good advice from a voice of experience! Thank you @philson for sharing some of your thoughts. Keep up the good work!

@philson – Thanks so much for the #twitterview. Still a great resource and I’m honored to participate. Drive safely!

@JoelECarlson – Hello everyone, and welcome to the Twitterview of busy mom and techie-gal @etupper. Lets get to Tweetn’!

Q – #1    So @etupper, where did you grow up, what HS did you attend and what did you do for schooling/training after HS?

A: I grew up in St. Paul just north of Sun Ray. Attended Hill-Murray for HS.

After HS I attended MCTC for college to pursue a career as an architect

It wasn’t the right career path for me, so I left before completing my degree too enter the workforce.

Q – #2    So what kind of work did you do then, and how did that lead you to what you do now?

A: I already knew how to build websites, taught myself in 96, and started as web developer working for FindLaw in 2000.

I am still at FindLaw and have had the fortunate opportunity to work in several different roles in during the past decade.

Web Dev, Tech Support, Account Management, SEO, and my favorite People Management.

I love technology and developing and creating more efficient processes and coaching and developing people

This love has more recently lead me to additional projects including @ShesGeeky and @SieEnt.

Q – #3    And in your spare time you sleep and eat right? :) How did you make your 1st website back in 96′? What program?

A: HA! yes, I get 8 hrs sleep each night :). I built my 1st site on geocities using notepad. Very hardcore!

Q – #4    Sure is! Now about @ShesGeeky, explain what that is and why you got involved with the MN Chapter of it?

A: @SheGeeky is an unconference for women and girls interested/working in STEM fields.

Last year @moarinternets and I attend the DC conference with the intention of bringing it back to Twin Cities.

We had our 1st conference @sciencemuseummn in Aug with great success, and are currently looking at dates for 2011.

I love the forum that @ShesGeeky offers women/girls which is a place where they can network & meet like minded people.

For me bringing @ShesGeeky to the Twin Cities was one of greatest professional accomplishment to date.

Q – #5    Congrats to you on the success of @ShesGeeky! In addition to tech, what other passion do you have? (HINT: Austin TX)

A: I have recently traveled to Austin, TX to attend #gdconline for @SieEnt and #aclfest

I love to travel and see live music. #aclfest had a 100+ bands across 3 days. It was an amazing experience.

I have also recently started running. Did my 1st 5k @WomenRun back in Sept. My #1 passion is being a mom.

Q – #6    Wasn’t there an #aclfest App too? On to the FAVS: Favorite – restaurant, store, area to run and Fall activity?

A: there was an #aclfest app. I pick all the bands I wanted to see and didn’t miss a beat as I move from stage to stage.

Fav restaurant. I love eating outside! @CiaoBella

Fav store would be @Target. I am a huge couponer. I love there mobile coupons.

Fav area to run would be around the park in my neighborhood or at @LifeTimeFitness

Fav fall activity, I can’t just pick one: going to rock shows, the apple orchard I recommend Afton Apple, hiking, etc

Q – #7    Some good choices. For people considering a jump into web design/development, what’s one piece of advice you’d share?

A:    for those wanting to enter web dev/des I would recommend building a site on your own if you haven’t done so already

Or entering the field a different way. Start out as a Project Manager.

Q – #8    So learn by “digging in”. To end with today, what mantra or life advice would you like to share today?

A: If you desire to be something or try something new just do it. Keep telling people you story. It’s working for me :)

@JoelECarlson – Thanks so much for your time today and sharing some of your life on Twitter. Have a great afternoon @etupper!

@etupper – thanks!

@JoelECarlson – Hello everybody, I hope that your having a great day. Lets get rolling on the Twitterview of @emilyjmc shall we.

@emilyjmc – Hi! And thanks, @joelecarlson. We’ll see how this goes for this former mag journalist. Not used to being on THIS side!

Q – #1    So @emilyjmc, where did you grow up, what HS did you attend, and what kind of schooling/training did you get after HS?

A: I grew up (mostly) in Rochester, MN — the ultimate company town. (Mayo Clinic, IBM). Went to Mayo HS, and Wash U in St. Louis.

Majored in — are you sitting down? — Italian and Psychology. My parents just smiled and let me do it. Bravo to them!

Q – #2    Very interesting! So after getting out of college, what did you do?

A: I went to AK, where I worked at Denali Nat’l Park for six months — and four seasons. Met my now-husband @bvanderah there.

Amazing experience. And a great job for a grad during horrible economy (’91 — much like ’08-’09), with a “useful” major.

Finally landed at a B2B magazine in the trade show/event business, where I worked in various capacities for about 8 yrs.

Q – #3     So what kind of work do you do now, and how has your life/work been effected by social media?

A: I’m an independent content strategist, helping agencies w/sales comms, client-program strategy, & content integration.

Social media is a big part of what I do. It helps me gauge what’s important to my clients’ customers’ customers.

And of course social media is a significant element of strategic content planning today, for both B2B and B2C.

Q – #4    Cool! So who are some people that you get value from being connected (following) to on Twitter? (5-10)

A: Tons of people — hard to name just 5-10! But to begin: @agencybabylon, @nylons, @irishgirl (candid, SMART, funny)

@opipop (Scottish expat in Prague – artist, actor, apparent bon vivant, shares amazing sociocultural/artistic links)

@andrewkorf (connected to the best of MSP cultural life; always shares opportunities to plug in)

And I’ll add @craft — I’m a nerdy crafter at heart. “Tis the season to start thinking wool yarn.

Q – #5    You’ve mentioned some good local folks! Are you a @foursquare user, and if so, what’s your most unique badge?

A: I’m a member of the proud FourSquare resistance. Not on board. Just felt like one more thing to manage.

I often wish people would de-link their Foursquare ck-ins from Twitter… Makes me sound like a curmudgeon, I know.

Q – #6    A member of the #FoursquareResistance huh? Do you do any geolocation Social Media? Do you see it’s value?

A: I don’t use any geolocation svcs. As a marketer, however, I do see their value.

If I were still in my pre-kid days (that is, still going out a lot!), I could see using one.

Most of my ck-ins would be: Home, Client A/B/C, Grocery Store, Target. Woot woot!

Q – #7    That’s fair. Let go to your FAVS: Favorite – restaurant, store, Fall activity, tech gadget and Social Media platform?

A: Favs! OK: Restaurant: I

Whoops. Try again: Fav restaurant: I’m a fan of local/n’hood joints. Cheap Charlies in Rochester, MN; Al Vento in MSP.

Fav store: The shop @walkerartcenter , and the great resale/consignment places in MSP like GH2 & ARC; also Opitz.

I’m a huge fan of the great find/great deal — reward the hunt! And like the green-ness of reuse.

Fav fall activity: Walking along M’haha creek below the falls to the Mississippi, or sitting on our dock.

Fav tech gadget: Prob my heart-rate monitor! Started running again last Fall after 3+ yr hiatus due to injury.

Seeing progress through cardio condition and pace is a great motivator. Fav SM platform? Prob. Twitter via Tweetdeck.

Q – #8    Good stuff! Looking forward, what plans/goals do you have for yourself either personally or professionally?

A: The same for both: Balance! (Cliche alert…). I’m a barely reformed workaholic who often falls off the wagon.

I want to regularly read for pleasure again, and for my kids to no longer say my laptop is my best friend. (ouch!)

And now that I’ve made my goals public, they’ll happen, right?

Q – #9    Eww ouch!! We’re ALL learning balance! :) To end with today, what advice or mantra would you like to leave w/everyone?

A: Hmmm. The greatest respect you can pay someone is to shut off your mobile device(s) when you are together in person.

And ride your bike!

@JoelECarlson – YESSSS! I saw a bad example of that at a restaurant this weekend. Well thank you @emilyjmc for sharing some of your life today.

@emilyjmc – Thank YOU! This was fun. And painless. :-)

Twitterview (2.0) with Elizabeth Ries

Posted by on Friday, 8 October, 2010

@JoelECarlsonHello everyone, and welcome to the Twitterview of @ElizabethRies. We’re doing our part to save her voice for TV and radio!

@ElizabethRiesHey @JoelECarlson!

Q – #1    To begin, @ElizabethRies was Twitterview #45, so it’s great to Tweet with her again. To start, how was your summer, any traveling?

A: Nice to be back with you! Summer was great! Lots of traveling to cabins up north, NYC and Vegas over Labor Day.

Q – #2    So kind of all over. What kind of traveler are you? Sit and relax by the pool/lake or the sightseer/explorer?

A: Both! But my favorite thing to do while traveling is try great restaurants. I plan around meals! Then I work out :)

Q – #3    Understood! Are there certain kinds or restaurants that you look for? What was one of the fancier restaurants?

A: I’m a big fan of Asian retaurants. In Vegas we went to Tao in the Venetian and everything was incredible!

Q – #4    Yum! Lets switch gears to your work. You’re at @TwinCities_Live & @MyTalk1071. Does scheduling get tricky 4 U?

A: Sometimes, yes! I’m usually running through the building 90 secs before I have to be on air. But that’s the fun of it!

Q – #5    :D  Now the @MyTalk1071 Dirt Alert gig is new since we last Twitterviewed. How has that experience been going for you?

A: I love it. It’s celeb news and gossip at 8:20, 1:20 and 5:20 weekdays. I love interacting with the @mytalk1071 hosts!

Radio is a fun change of pace from TV and it’s great to get to do both.

Q – #6    I heard today that you’re going to be doing some “fill-in” work on @MyTalk1071 next week. What’s the time slot?

A: That’s true! Mon-Wed next week I’m filling for Ian and Margery from 6-10 am.

Q – #7    Fun! Now you no doubt enjoy exploring MN as well. Any neat events, boutiques or restaurants you’ve seen recently?

A: of course! I bought a house in Mpls so I’ve been checking out spots in my new area. Birchwood cafe, Longfellow grill…

and I’ve been stopping by a little boutique called corazon on lake street and w river pkwy. Cute everything there!

Q – #8    It’s fun to explore and find new/interesting places in the TC’s! Looking ahead, any goals/plans for the next yr?

A: first priority: get a garbage disposal installed in my old house! My main work goal is to keep pushing myself…

I’m just trying to get better at what I do every day and appreciate the ride!

Q – #9    That sounds like a very good/balanced view! To end with, any tip or mantra you’d like to share with everyone?

A: probably similar to my last twitterview…instead of constantly looking for the next thing in life…

focus on making now the best it can be. I really believe that’s when the next great opportunity will find you!

I’ve worked on that a lot since I started at kstp and I’ve never been happier.

@JoelECarlson – Very good! It’s been a pleasure to Tweet w/you again @elizabethries. Enjoy the great weather and have a great weekend!

@ElizabethRies – thanks so much, it was great fun!

Twitterview with Ali Kaplan

Posted by on Wednesday, 6 October, 2010

@JoelECarlson – Hello everyone! If you’re in MN, hopefully you get to enjoy the outdoors some today. Lets being the Twitterview of @AliShops!

Q – #1    So @AliShops, where did you grow up, what HS did you attend and after that, where did you go for schooling/training?

A: Edina girl, I must confess. Edina HS, UW-Madison journalism grad.

Q – #2    So a VERY local gal. Now what life-steps did you take from UW-Madison to get you to where you are today?

A: More writing than shopping, actually. Interned Milwaukee Sentinel, worked for Daily Herald in Chicago

Q – #3    So how did you end in in the Twin Cities after being in Chicago?

A: Was ready to move on and @pioneerpress was looking for a consumer features writer. Plus, my mom begged.

Q – #4    Moms do have a certain “power” don’t they! So how soon did you jump into your shopping blogging and deal searching?

A: I’ve been writing about retail since my Chicago days; evolved into column/fashion/shopping coverage @pioneerpress…

Saw a need to take it online in ’06. Created www.alishops.com as a resource for local shopping.

shout out to @derickson who built www.alishops.com and www.alishopsblog.com.

Q – #5    Great! With the current economy, do you see MORE interest in people looking for deals and learning “what’s new” in retail?

A: Sure – big focus now on value/local/US made. But beyond necessity, sale shopping is hobby. It’s cool to brag abt deals.

Q – #6    Sounds like fun! From your vantage point @AliShops, do you see any brands or types of stores that are lacking in the Twin Cities?

A: Designer. High end. Cool as we are, MN hasn’t snagged a #Barneys or even a Barneys Co-op.

And @mallofamerica should b able to snag int’l brands like Top Shop, French Connection.

Q – #7    I think the @MallOfAmerica has “snagged” some high-end shops right? What are your FAVS: restaurant, store & gadget?

A: They’re working on it. Fancy new marble cooridor is helping. @mallofamerica is a gr8t asset and draw for retailers…

Favs @mallofamerica? @Nordstrom & Rack, LOVE new #77kids, Levis, DSW, Wolfgang Puck, love it all!

Oh, and QVC @mallofamerica has good prices on some beauty lines (better than sephora!

Q – #8    So what is your overall goal as to the purpose of your blog, and do you have any goals for it in the future?

A: Giving voice to shoppers likes/dislikes, common sense for retailers and celebrating the cool shopping/fashion in MN

Hope to bring www.alishops.com to other markets. Great shopping doesn’t only happen in NY!

Cool expansion idea! To end with today, what advice or mantra would you like to share with everyone?

@JoelECarlson – THANKS to @AliShops for taking some time out of her busy schedule to share some of her work and life today. Good work!
