A: I grew up in RedWing MN and went to the high school there and then finished up with home school.

I went into construction working with my dad after that

Q – #2    Cool! So jumping ahead to NOW. What kind of work do you do now, and how did you get into that field?

A: I work with secure file transfers now. I got injured in construction that required me to change fields.

after my injury and multiple surgeries I went back to school with the idea of going into information security

I loved that role but after the economy downturn I was laid after some time I was able to get the job I have now

Q – #3    Layoffs have hit many people lately. :(  So what kinds of programs or software do you use in your current job?

A: I primarily use a tool called Axway. It’s a way to securely deliver files that contain sensitive data.

I spend a lot of my time working in Linux and use pretty standard transfer protocols like SFTP, FTP and HTTPS

Q – #4    I see. Security/Privacy is important in the tech-world! I see you’re Tweeting from an #iPad. Your thoughts on it?

A: as someone who thought the iPad was a joke and had a stupid name I have to admit I was soooo wrong. I love it!

I use it for everything and I keep finding new uses for it.

Q – #5    What is one of the most entertaining Apps that you currently have on your #iPad?

A: one of the most entertaining huh? That’s tough there’s so many but I would have to say Angry Birds

Q – #6    I’ve played #AngryBirds. It’s kind of addicting! Now for your FAVS: Favorite restaurant, store, website and Fall activity?

A: fav restaurant is Salut Fav store has to be Bestbuy…so many shinys Fave website is either Amazon or Etsy

Q – #7    So to end today and this week, what job-hunting or tech advice would you like to share with people?

@00lyl00 – thanks you too!

@JoelECarlson – Hello everyone and welcome to a Food-Friday Twitterview of @katenthekitchen. Lets get cooking!

@katenthekitchen – Hello Joel! All ready to talk food on this gorgeous day!

Q – #1    So to start with @katenthekitchen, where did you grow up and what did you do right out of High School?

A: I’m a Mpls girl all the way; grew up in S Mpls, went to Washburn HS, class of ’82. Out of HS, I attended the U of M

Majored in Psychology, with a Minor in English Composition-took me a long time to figure out what studies I liked.

Q – #2    What coursework did you take at the #UofM and how did your life steer you to work in the field of food?

A: I didn’t get into food until much later in life; but once I did I realize I should have been here all along

I’ve always had a passion for food, from the age of 7 I’ve been cooking. There just came a point …..

… where it seemed logical for me to do something with that passion so I went to culinary school in 2005

Graduated in 2006 with a culinary degree and a Wine Professionals Certification from St Paul College

My goal now is to just get people cooking, in their own kitchens, with healthy ingredients to nurture themselves

Q – #3    Good for you! :) Now do you have a particular focus with your cooking? How long have you blogged?

A: I began the blog in 2006, right out of school. It’s changed a lot over the yrs, but now I feel the focus is solid

I love writing about the connections we have to food; the memories it brings, the feelings & emotions, the sensualness

There is such a symbiotic pull btwn ppl & their food, so much of it that nourishes us, more than just physically

I cook all our meals at home from scratch, with as much nutrition as possible, and very simply. The food should…

… speak for itself, with as little embellishment as possible. It should be simple, easy and taste terrific!

Q – #4    You are certainly focused! So are you big on either meat, organic, vegan or “free range” cooking?

A: My idea of food is that there are no ‘rules’. I eat meat, I prefer organic, I love vegetables. I would be far more…

…local w/ more effort, but I love fruit too much to ever be able to do that. I like to think that moderation….

… works for the way we eat. Nothing is off limits, and little portions can mean the difference btwn craving and …

…satiation. I don’t eat a lot of fried foods, or cook those at home so that’s about all that’s really off limits.

Our meals at home are really varied- we love ethnic foods, spicy foods and a lot of variety. It keeps the palate sharp.

Q – #5    So where do you like to go to shop for food?  Do you think there are any kinds of grocery/specialty stores missing?

A: I shop all over; grocery stores, co-ops, specialty stores. I’m kind of a freak that way. I’ll go all over for one thing.

I think the Cities could use more good butchers. We really need to have some ethical meat markets around

I love Fresh & Natural Foods in Shoreview as they carry strictly organic foods. I also love Lunds/Byerlys

Q – #6    Lets find out about your FAVS: Favorite – restaurant, cook book, food blog and unique food/ingredient.

A: My fav. restaurant right now would be Brasa, but I don’t go out much due to budget constraints.

Fav chef? Not sure I really have one, but I do admire Tim McKee and Alex Roberts.

I couldn’t possibly pick a fav. food blog- I love so many for so many different reasons. I just love a good one that…

…focus on good food, real food and simple preparations.

Fav. foods would be anything ethnic, esp. Thai & Asian cuisine. I love chili peppers, beans and bacon too

The most used cookbook in my kitchen is The Best New Recipe, from the ATK ppl, or Joy of Cooking.

Q – #7    What have been some of your specialties that you’ve blogged about recently?

A: Fall specialties, made with apples like an Apple Streusel Bar. A coffee cake with Rice Krispies in the base

I’ve only just gotten back into blogging after working an intense job for the past 6 mos.

So I am really looking forward to having time to explore recipes, cook in my kitchen, share w/the community.

Q – #8    Maybe to help you. Are you looking for some additional work, or are you satisfied with what you have right now?

A: I would love work right now but the mkt is tough; my pref. would be for day hours w/a good rest.

I would love to have the ability to write about food for a living too. With the right pub. I’m sure I could be useful.

I’m open really to all possibilities, pref. w/a lot of flexibility for my family.

Q – #9    I hope that something good comes along for you! :) To end today, what advice would you give to cooking newbies?

A: Explore everything, try everything and be afraid of nothing. Practice techniques and recipes over & over again.

I think that anyone can cook and be good at it, but it takes practice, intention and perseverance.

Ask for help, take some classes or hire someone to help get you to where you want to be in the kitchen.

We will always need to eat, and we should be eating well for optimum health. Learn how to do it well to be able…

… to live long life, with good health both physically & mentally. A good diet is the key to a good life!

@JoelECarlson – Thanks @katenthekitchen for your time sharing some of your life and passion today. Have a great evening and weekend!

@katenthekitchen – Thank you Joel!! I appreciate the opportunity- and you enjoy the weekend as well!

TwitterREVIEW with Butters And Beans (Ann Evans)

Posted by on Wednesday, 20 October, 2010

@JoelECarlson – Good morning everyone and welcome to the TwiterReview of @buttersandbeans owner Ann Evans. Lets get started!

Q – #1    To start Ann, what is @buttersandbeans?

A: butters&beans is a brand new fashion-centric organic and eco-friendly infant clothing line!

Q – #2    That’s a great idea. So what made you think of @buttersandbeans, and how can people find you and your clothing?

A: b&b started when I noticed that there were not a lot of colorful and fun organic kids clothing options on the market…

…everything seemed a little bland and boring – a lot of that “natural” color (if that’s a color), and earthy tones -

…and everything was made in plain cotton – no texture. So, b&b was born!

We are launching hopefully later this afternoon at buttersandbeans.com! #crossingmyfingers

Q – #3    So just a web-store, not a brick and mortar location? What age range or sizes of clothing will you carry?

A: Just a web-store for now…although we may be looking at a brick and mortar in the future :) #50thandFrance

We currently are only working with the wee-est of babes, up to 12 months.

I would rather concentrate on fewer sizes, and do them perfectly, than do more sizes, and maybe not so perfectly. :)

Q – #4    A good place to start! Now is it clothing only or are there toys, strollers, car seats, etc. also available?

A: We keep our concentration very focused – organic clothing only. Fashion has always been my love.

Q – #5    Fun! So regarding your clothing: Local brands? National brands? What are some of the materials used?

A: We actually design and produce all of our clothing in-house – b&b is a brand of its own, not just an online store.

Twitter problems!

Our Fall Collection features super soft velour, fleece, sherpa, woven cotton, knit cotton…lots of fun materials!

Gotta love Twitter! #overcapacity

Q – #6    So who does your designing, and where are your clothes made?

A: I do all of our designing (super fun), and all of our products are made here in the Twin Cities…

…by amazing local seamstresses (love keeping it in the Twin Cities)!

Q – #7    Local is great and good business sense! So to end today, any specials to share or goals for the Co. to share?

A: Our goals are simple – to do our small part for the planet, and to provide a new, fun and modern option for organic…

clothing (adding mama pieces soon). Make sure to follow us for specials, and thank you so much for the twitterview!

@JoelECarlson – Thanks Ann for bringing a great idea and company like @buttersandbeans to MN. Nothing but success to your and your Co.!

TwitterREVIEW with Details Style Lab (Brian Horst)

Posted by on Monday, 18 October, 2010

@JoelECarlson – Hello everyone, and welcome to the TwitterReview of @detailsstylelab. Lets begin and do so with style! :)

Q – #1    So Brian Horst of @DetailsStyleLab, how long has your business been around, and where is it located?

A: Details Started in 99 with a location in Highland Park. Then expanded with the first location in DT St. Paul NYE 02

We moved our DT location to St Peter street in the Lowry Dec 07. In April 09 we focused all efforts in the DT and added mens clothing

The biggest difference in locations DT is that we went from the skyway to the street. We between Pazzaluna and Sakura

Q – #2    I see. What are some of the services that you offer at your salon, and how did you decide to get into mens clothing?

A: We offer all hair, skin and body services. Featuring Aveda, Phyto, Moroccan Oil, Dermalogica and Bare Minerals.

I decided to go into men’s clothing after attending the clothing market with my wife. I saw a ton of great pieces.

Styles that I never found around town. We really try to focus on more fitted european style clothing.

I also felt that DT needed more retail variety and we had enough space for our salon/spa.Men’s clothing was that variety

Q – #3    Interesting. So what kind of size range do you offer? Tall? Short? Avg build? Athletic Cut? Who is your target?

A: Most of or clothing is targeted at the avg build guy. One client made the comment that “it’s nice to be rewarded for

being in shape.” The age range is broad, 16 – 60. Size runs Small-2XL.

Guys like You! :-)

Q – #4    Guys like me huh? :) As far as your salon goes, what is your primary demographic for customers? Any specialties?

A: We see a wide range of age in our clients. Most are biz pros and residents of DT.We do Bio Ionic smoothingtreatmetns

and we were recently recognize nationally for a on-line series, hot in my salon and filmed a hot new textural treatment.

This treatment give a result from loose wave to curls. We think the flat straight looks have passed, time for body!

We also offer a couple great oil treatments both for moisture and for volume/density.Moroccan Oil with color is great

Q – #5    Great idea! Now for people that come in and say “I want a new look.”, how do you help them decide?

A: Well first off, we’re not all cut-a-holics.It’s really about asking good questions to determine what will be fashionable

functional and esthetically pleasing. The hippest look won’t look good if the person isn’t comfortable with it.

Personally I like to hold/move the hair around to create different shapes to show how it effects their face shape.

Lessons on recreating the look are key as well. Products, tools, techniques etc,

Go with a look your willing and able to manage and maintain…and this doesn’t always mean a lot of time.

Q – #6    What is one tip you’d offer to men and one tip you’d offer to women in picking a good hairstyle for themselves?

A: For men I say, don’t over do the styling. For women, use high heat (blowdry) and direct the airflow down the hair.

Q – #7    Okay. So to end today, any specials that you have or a last point you’d like to make as to what’s available at @detailsstylelab?

A: The best thing I can say is follow us on twitter/facebook. We throw some nice offers out last minute. We also have a

a VIP men’s sale email list to get the inside scoop on private sales.Mention you saw this twitter review and we take

$10 off your next service. I’m shameless! We also start our food drive next month! Thanks for your time Joel!

@JoelECarlson – Thanks to Brian Horst of @detailsstylelab for this time today and sharing with us about his business and their services!

Twitterview (2.0) with Phil Wilson

Posted by on Friday, 15 October, 2010

@JoelECarlson – Hello everyone, and welcome to the Twitterview 2.0 of @philson. Just didn’t learn enough about him from his 1st one. :)  Lets begin!

@philson – I’m giddy with anticipation..I’m honored.

Q – #1    So @philson, from a professional level, how has your summer been? (events, projects, etc.)

A: It’s been kind of a crazy summer. Lately, I’ve been doing smaller projects for a lot of different folks. Learning as well.

@minnov8 continues to let me learn more about the social and tech community. All good stuff and only a few gripes, go figure.

Q – #2    Got to meet @sborsch of @minnov8 the other day. Smart guy! What was your role at the #MIMASummit, and your impression of it?

A: I totally dug the MIMA Summit this year. Amazing what Wifi can do for your demeanor. @minnov8 was liveblogging the entire @mimasummit

I spent most of my time in a room interviewing the speakers and panelists for the live stream. I’m hopeful that video will be posted soon.

One of the highlights was hanging our with @garyvee. I shot some of my own video and will be using that on @remaincomm soon.

My disappointment at @mimsummit was not getting to spend time talking with @xenijardin. I’m a fan & was hoping she’d sign my breast.

Q – #3    Great, I caught a few of them live! In Social Media, #NewTwitter and FB-Groups have been launched. Any opinions on them?

A: Ahh…#newtwitter…I supposedly have it but my Firefox/MacBook Pro config doesn’t like it…I get a blank screen.

I’ve always used @tweetdeck so I’ll stick with that. FB-Groups could suffer from the same fate as Google Wave. Is there a need?

More on FB-Groups…what FB has going for it is a stronger group culture. We have to be careful about getting ahead of user needs though.

Things like wave and fb-groups all have a place in the digital and Social future. Sometimes innovation may take awhile to be adopted.

Q – #4    It seems like their is some copying/competition amongst @Google, @Twitter, @Facebook & #LinkedIn. What’s your favorite?

A: Copying…the heck you say? I think so many of the services are good for different voices. That’s good. @linkedIn is not @facebook

I don’t have a favorite but I seem to be on facebook more lately. Twitter is a great tool for finding info and the DM is big for me.

@philson – BTW, the @apstylebook tells me I can now use moviegoer, filmgoer, and theatergoer. Finally, I can get some sleep (bedgoer?)

Q – #5    Interesting. On the personal side, did you get to travel some during the Summer/Fall seasons at all?

A: We did the MN required “trip up north” to a cabin and lake. State law says you make that trip once every 5 yrs or move out, right?

We actually go out and travel more than most know…I rarely announce being out on @foursquare and such. I think that’s still TMI

Speaking of @foursquare, I think location based Social Media needs to be more about benefits. We have many opportunities there.

Q – #6    Right! :) I wonder at what longitude in MN do people no longer say “going up North”? Are you a hiker, hunter or reader?

A: I’m more of an naturalist I guess. I love the overall beauty of where we live. I don’t hunt. I just can’t pull off blaze orange.

Q – #7    LOL! (re:orange) So to end today, what would you encourage new adapters/users of Social Media to do?

A: That’s easy…relax! I started @Remaincomm with that very attitude. Using all these tools to communicate are not required.

Try things and commit to what works for you, what accomplishes your goal. Keep expectations in line with how “new” a service is.

@JoelECarlson – VERY good advice from a voice of experience! Thank you @philson for sharing some of your thoughts. Keep up the good work!

@philson – Thanks so much for the #twitterview. Still a great resource and I’m honored to participate. Drive safely!

Twitterview with Liz Tupper

Posted by on Thursday, 14 October, 2010

@JoelECarlson – Hello everyone, and welcome to the Twitterview of busy mom and techie-gal @etupper. Lets get to Tweetn’!

Q – #1    So @etupper, where did you grow up, what HS did you attend and what did you do for schooling/training after HS?

A: I grew up in St. Paul just north of Sun Ray. Attended Hill-Murray for HS.

After HS I attended MCTC for college to pursue a career as an architect

It wasn’t the right career path for me, so I left before completing my degree too enter the workforce.

Q – #2    So what kind of work did you do then, and how did that lead you to what you do now?

A: I already knew how to build websites, taught myself in 96, and started as web developer working for FindLaw in 2000.

I am still at FindLaw and have had the fortunate opportunity to work in several different roles in during the past decade.

Web Dev, Tech Support, Account Management, SEO, and my favorite People Management.

I love technology and developing and creating more efficient processes and coaching and developing people

This love has more recently lead me to additional projects including @ShesGeeky and @SieEnt.

Q – #3    And in your spare time you sleep and eat right? :) How did you make your 1st website back in 96′? What program?

A: HA! yes, I get 8 hrs sleep each night :). I built my 1st site on geocities using notepad. Very hardcore!

Q – #4    Sure is! Now about @ShesGeeky, explain what that is and why you got involved with the MN Chapter of it?

A: @SheGeeky is an unconference for women and girls interested/working in STEM fields.

Last year @moarinternets and I attend the DC conference with the intention of bringing it back to Twin Cities.

We had our 1st conference @sciencemuseummn in Aug with great success, and are currently looking at dates for 2011.

I love the forum that @ShesGeeky offers women/girls which is a place where they can network & meet like minded people.

For me bringing @ShesGeeky to the Twin Cities was one of greatest professional accomplishment to date.

Q – #5    Congrats to you on the success of @ShesGeeky! In addition to tech, what other passion do you have? (HINT: Austin TX)

A: I have recently traveled to Austin, TX to attend #gdconline for @SieEnt and #aclfest

I love to travel and see live music. #aclfest had a 100+ bands across 3 days. It was an amazing experience.

I have also recently started running. Did my 1st 5k @WomenRun back in Sept. My #1 passion is being a mom.

Q – #6    Wasn’t there an #aclfest App too? On to the FAVS: Favorite – restaurant, store, area to run and Fall activity?

A: there was an #aclfest app. I pick all the bands I wanted to see and didn’t miss a beat as I move from stage to stage.

Fav restaurant. I love eating outside! @CiaoBella

Fav store would be @Target. I am a huge couponer. I love there mobile coupons.

Fav area to run would be around the park in my neighborhood or at @LifeTimeFitness

Fav fall activity, I can’t just pick one: going to rock shows, the apple orchard I recommend Afton Apple, hiking, etc

Q – #7    Some good choices. For people considering a jump into web design/development, what’s one piece of advice you’d share?

A:    for those wanting to enter web dev/des I would recommend building a site on your own if you haven’t done so already

Or entering the field a different way. Start out as a Project Manager.

Q – #8    So learn by “digging in”. To end with today, what mantra or life advice would you like to share today?

A: If you desire to be something or try something new just do it. Keep telling people you story. It’s working for me :)

@JoelECarlson – Thanks so much for your time today and sharing some of your life on Twitter. Have a great afternoon @etupper!

@etupper – thanks!
