Twitterview #112 – With Sally McGraw (@SallyMcGraw)

Posted by on Monday, 19 July, 2010

@JoelECarlson – Hello everyone and welcome to today’s Twitterview of @SallyMcGraw. Lets bring in the style!

@SallyMcGraw – Thanks, Joel, I’m delighted to be chatting with you today!

Q – #1    To begin @SallyMcGraw – Where did you grow up, and what steps led you to who you are and what you do today?

A:    Grew up in Evanston, a suburb of Chicago. Hated my body as a kid and it wasn’t til I discovered style that I learned to love it.

So I began blogging about the link between style and body image about three years ago at alreadypretty.com.

It’s been an amazing journey! I’ve learned a ton about myself, and even more about women and body image in general.

Q – #2    Very cool. What kind of topics do you discuss, and what are the current “hot topics” you get comments on?

A:    It’s been an amazing journey! I’ve learned a ton about myself, and even more about women and body image in general.

Really runs the gamut! I post about anything that relates to style, self-esteem, women’s issues, fashion, or clothing.

Recent hot topics include verbal cattiness among women, and today’s post on modesty and revelation. Heated comments!

My readers are respectful and thoughtful, but they’re not afraid to express themselves

Q – #3    I see. Now in addition to your blog, don’t you also help people dress? (Figuratively, not socks on their feet.)

A:    Yes! I offer in-person closet consultations and personal shopping to Twin Cities clients. I love doing those.

I’ve worked with women of all ages, sizes, and styles and had great success with them all.

Often, you just need an outsider’s perspective to confirm what should stay and go within your own closet.

I also offer consulting services via e-mail, and am working with three clients simultaneously right now. Whew!

Q – #4    I’m assuming with the email clients that they send video or photos to help get your insight?

A:    Yep, I’ve got a whole process. They send photos of themselves in a few outfits, an inventory, and we work together.

I also utilize @polyvore quite a bit to build potential new outfits. It’s tremendously helpful.

Q – #5    Now you’ve been blogging for a few years, but what forms of Social Media do you use, and how has it helped you?

A:    I have a Facebook page for the blog, and a small community of readers gets content solely from that page.

Many of those readers choose to comment on the Facebook page instead of on the blog.

Also Twitter, of course. Readers who want to know more about the everyday me can learn random facts by following me!

I also maintain a YouTube channel w the various video tutorials I’ve posted. http://www.youtube.com/user/badgermcgraw

Oh, the Facebook page for Already Pretty is here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Already-Pretty/68083150521

Social media has allowed me to connect to my readers on a more personal, interactive level. Converse w them casually.

I also find out about new topics, trends, questions, and issues from Twitter. Loads of great info floats around!

Q – #6    Who are say 5-15 people that you follow for insight, humor or inspiration?

A:    @budgetbabe keeps me in the know about bargains, sales, and trends.

@lemon_love is a buddy who cracks me up – without fail – by being the most random human ALIVE.

MPR’s @juliaschrenkler makes sure I know at least SOMETHING about what’s going on in the world.

@whorange is my go-to for all things design and art.

@daddylikeyblog is a beloved fellow blogger who is as helpful and insightful as she is hilarious.

@rabbitwhite is a new favorite, with insight into matters of feminism, sexuality, body image … all good stuff.

Q – #7    Now to the FAVS questions: Favorite – restaurant, offline store, online store, summer activity & color?

A:    Favorite restaurant is Sapor. Amazing food, gorgeous setting. http://www.facebook.com/saporcafe

Offline store is a tie between Opitz (http://www.opitzoutlet.com/) and Value VIllage (http://www.arcsvaluevillage.org/)

Online store is @Etsy. Handmade and vintage goods from around the world at amazing prices.

Fave summer activity is biking. I ride my 65-pound, one-speed Electra cruiser EVERYWHERE once it gets warm!

Favorite color is red. Always has been. Bold, bright, and looks good with my skin tones.

Q – #8    Nice! To end today – what final thought or mantra would you like to share with everyone?

A:    Love your WHOLE body. Even the jiggly bits.

@JoelECarlson – LOL! Nice point. :) Thank you very much @SallyMcGraw for sharing some of your life and thoughts today. Enjoy your afternoon.

@SallyMcGraw – Thanks for the opportunity, Joel! You rock.

You’re the Foursquare “Mayor” of where you work – So what?

Posted by on Monday, 19 July, 2010

You may see the notification from a friend of yours if you play Foursquare or see it on your Twitter feed, that someone has become the “Mayor” of the office where they work. How does that make you feel when you see that?  Are you proud that your friend has now become the “Mayor” of where they work?  Are you glad that they made it to work today? Are you envious that they are “Mayor” of where they work and you aren’t the “Mayor” of where you work? Do you even care, or do you think it’s a waste of a check-in?

Wasn’t Foursquare set up as a game with the purpose of being used by businesses to stir up business from customers?  A way to create incentives for customers to come back again and again. “Check-in once a day for a week and get $.50 off your next cup of coffee.” “Become the Mayor of our location and get free dry cleaning for a month.”  If the purpose of the various Social Media tools is for “Social Good”, doesn’t becoming the “Mayor” of your company create competition within the office? People already do that without having a “Mayorship” being added to the pile of issues: Who does the boss like more? Who dresses better? Who has the better desk or cubicle? Who gets priority or first choice when it comes to getting time off?  Maybe you’re in a company where those pressures or competition don’t even exist. If that’s true, then good for you.  If they do exist though, why stir up the pot more. Be a valuable employee. Prove your worth in reality and not fiction like being the “Mayor” of where you work. What do you think?
