@JoelECarlson - Hark, who goes there? Well it’s none other than @harkherold as today’s Twitterview guest. May the Tweeting begin.

@harkherold – Good Morning, Joel!

Q – #1 Lets find out – Where did you grow up? What are some steps in your life from High School up until today?

A: I’m a died-in-the-wool cheesehead from central Wisconsin who went to the U of M to study Medicine and Norwegian, of all things

lol that would be ‘dYed’ – more coffee, please

but medicine didn’t work out because I kept passing out – got a History degree, worked in golf and now am a Mktng Dir

going to @concordiastpaul to get a MA in Strategic Communication Management – great program @winegarden @newcoventry

Q – #2 Golf?!?! Golf pro? Putt-putt golf? :) What did you did in the area of golf?

A: Don’t I wish-golf pro! I developed new courses on the East Coast-marketing, membership – general rainmaker #jectv #badgolfer

Q – #3 Interesting. So what kind of marketing do you do now? What fields of business have you done marketing for?

A: I work for an auto group in mktng, consultative sales training, etc.. About = time in private clubs and cars so far

If you genuinely pay attention to the customer, sales skills are cross-marketable in about any industry

focusing now on internet and finding the delicate balance of web promotion and marketing – entirely different animal

We know that companies can’t just jump on and sell – but companies often don’t. It’s an educational process w/new media

Q – #4 Any interest in non-profit work? Also, what are the MN-Romantic languages?

A: Love working with non-profits! Do lots of volunteer marketing – working on @CHSFS Winemaker’s Dinner and @fmsc_org

One project is working to provide 1,000,000 meals for @fmsc_org this fall

Yah. Jeg snakker Norsk ogsaa.Sometimes even dream in Norwegian! Used to snakke Swedish and Danish too, men glempt alt for mye

Yikes! Got all riled up with my Norwegian and forgot the #jectv tag! Love Norway – lived there when I was 15. It’s amazing.

Q – #5 I see. So on Twitter, who are 5-10 people that you follow for either inspiration, education or humor?

A: Great question-so many wonderful people! @sarahjaneml for her humor and wit @JenKaneCo for her sparky i’net knowledge

Of course @JoelECarlson for bringing human side to MN Tweeps, @SocialNicole for working on #nptalk, @ericamayer for puking rainbows

& huge kudos 2 so many MN thought leaders in Twitter community – @maikelvdm @rickmahn @jmu612 @smbmsp are just a few

And let’s not forget @MichaelWMann who said he’ll meet us in Vegas for a flashy-fun Tweetup!

If ur not already, get connected at @mimatweet @jmu612 @smbmsp and others-you’ll meet amazing people & learn so much!

Q – #6 I need a Kleenex. (sniff,sniff) You are sweet! FAVS q’s – Favorite restaurant, store, summer activity & gadget.

A: Fave restaurants – lovin’ the @gingerhop_NE, Kramarchuk’s in nordeast, Black Sea Restaurant – the best falafel ever

Yeah, and if you need sweets, check out @grandmarubys and @spclassiccookie – mmmmsweets. Great people there, too!

Fave activity-gardening w/hubs.We can salsa every fall-last year did 98 jars in 6 flavors. Raspberry Chipotle was yum!

As for fave gadget, I’m hovering over the ‘buy’ button every day for the iPad. To buy or not to buy?!

I’m really not a shopper, but a fave is #Penzy’s on Grand. I go crazy with the spices and ideas for made-up recipes!

Q – #7 Nice choice! I can’t believe the hour is almost up! To end with today – what thought or mantra do you want to share?

A: Be mindful, grateful and find a slice of joy in whatever situation you’re in -and appreciate your health & your family!

Thanks, Joel – this has been fun! Now let’s all go get falafel :)

@JoelECarlson – That’s wonderful! Thanks so much @harkherold for your time and sharing some of your life today with everyone. Have a good afternoon!

@harkherold – Thanks, Joel – you too!

Twitterview with Lisa Foote

@JoelECarlson – I feel a bit guilty in Twitterviewing @footenotes from a Mac instead of a Smartphone. I wonder if the “Queen of Mobile” can tell? :)

@footenotes – I personally can’t tell; but if you were using our platform, we could “see” what HW you are using! #

Q – #1   Briefly @footenotes, tell us where you grew up and your background, and then we’ll get into what you do.

A:   Grew up in Ohio, moved to MN at 21; 1st 1/2 career in IT, 2nd 1/2 in fin’l svcs ops (GE, CapOne, Pru). Loving startup life

(Oh, and I’m only a modest Marchioness, not Queen, of Mobile )

Q – #2   How humble of you. :) So how did you get from financial services to having a mobile Co.? What does your company provide?

A:   Wanted to start new co, found mobile most exciting/highest growth sector. Plus it’s back to my IT “roots,” which I <3

@mixmobi was created to serve marketers who want fast, easy, flexible offers that work on any mobile (smart or non)

Q – #3   @footenotes – So texting? Graphics for coupons? Do you do apps as well?

A:   Text msg, smartphone apps (incl loc-based) social media QR/2D, AR: @mixmobi powers them all, on any mobile

Q – #4   @footenotes – With your field becoming such a growth industry, what kind of growth are you seeing with @mixmobi?

A:   Borrell Assoc forecasts mobile mktg will grow 84% CAGR thr 2014 w/ mobile coupons the “killer app.”

Q – #5   How do you get most of your business? Do people know what they want when they come to you?

A:   Biggest @mixmobi momentum: agencies who need an instant mobile offer platform, w/ text, smartphone, QR, AR options

Our biz gen’d through variety of sources; interestingly, many larger agencies have sought us out

Q – #6   @footenotes – For those that don’t know, what are QR & AR options?

A:   QR=Quick Response (aka 2D) http://bit.ly/wcLYm AR=Augmented Reality http://bit.ly/lTgY4

Q – #7   Any new developments, tools, technology that you see as the next “Big Thing” for mobile users?

A:   Co’s like @BestBuy becoming Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) could have big impact for consumers

Also think mobile web will cont to grow alongside smartphone apps; combination creates rich environment/opportunities

Q – #8   Neat! There has been a lot of talk lately about #Apple (Steve Jobs) vs #AdobeFlash. What’s your opinion of it’s use?

A:   IMO, no hard right/wrong. Vast amts of positioning from both: capitalism “red in tooth & claw.

Q – #9   I see. Well to end for today – What thought or mantra would you like to share with everyone?

A:   Thx-great #jectv interview!Thought:”What’s your greatest vision for yourself? What are you doing today to achieve that dream?”

@JoelECarlson – Thanks so much @footenotes for your time and your comments today! Everybody have a great and check in tomorrow at 11am.

@footenotes – Thank you, Joel – I enjoyed it! (Check out Joel’s next interview Wed June 30, 11am CDT

@JoelECarlson – Hello everyone, and welcome to Twitterview with @WCCO’s very own @humideye as the guest. Lets get to Tweet’n. :)

@humideye – Cool! I’m ready… and I pre-apologize for any misspellings

Q – #1   To start off with @humideye – Where did you grow up? Explain briefly your life from you HS graduation up until today.

A:   grew up in plymouth MN, went to wayzata HS /decided to go to @MCAD when I was about 25 and got my BFA in Graphic design

LOVED @MCAD such a great school – I graduated in 2006 and have been working @wcco ever since :)

I was your typical artsy kid with learning disabilities that really was mainly good at creative stuff / visual stuff

worked as a “designer” before starting @MCAD but knew that I didn’t really know what I was doing…

The design that I did looked ok / but “off” – I already knew the programs pretty well… so I learned pretty fast @MCAD

Q – #2   @humideye – What got you interested in graphic design, and did you think you’d use it for TV?

A:   The TV thing was not planned & random!… I took one Motion Graphics class while at mcad and FELL IN LOVE with it…

…@wcco called me after seeing my work online and asked me to come in for an interview…

…then there was some leg wrestling in the creative department and I fell in love :) the rest is history… :) #

…after working @wcco for about a year I was asked to teach a motion class @mcad (teaching is my new passion)

Q – #3   Awesome! @humideye – So what kinds of projects do you get to do? Any examples that we might have seen?

A:   Totally – here are some examples: this is one of the first projects I got to help with http://vimeo.com/12192935

…Franks mom was SO FREAKING CUTE… I worked with Raul Cadena on that last one… http://vimeo.com/7728740

… http://vimeo.com/6186033 <- This one was for the state fair last year – I did all of the design for “WE POWER”

I also get to do a lot of print work with something like the state fair: tshirts, signage, etc… http://bit.ly/ckj10D

I also had the privilege of working on The Wire for WCCO -> http://bit.ly/aZSdG3

Q – #4   Do you do any weather graphics? Can you get mauve & canary yellow added? :) What do you like most about your job?

A:   I did do some work for the weather graphics! look for the tiny clouds / sun’s / lighting & rain… those were mine!

I also do (as we all get to do) “production graphics” or short use daily graphics… not as fun but IMPORTANT :)

LOL! I def not mauve & canary! I DO know CBS corporate would have a problem with how I describe their graphics ;)

Q – #5   So you are obviously on Twitter, how has that helped you professionally & personally to use it?

A:   I LOVE TWITTER… Still getting used to it though. I was a true “hatter” in the beginning…

@ericamayer helped me see the twitter beacon of light… I think it’s imperative as a designer / creative to be on it

I’m always trying to get students to use it… some of them have with great success. My own success on twitter has…

…been in the area of freelance & finding out about other interesting people and project like @ARTCRANK

…there is a new world / a great community of contacts & and creatives on twitter!! It’s wonderful…

Q – #6   Now that you LOVE Twitter, who are 5-10 people that you follow that educate, entertain or humor you?

A:   some of my FAVORITE twitter peps are of course @ericamayer – she is such a blast & inspiration…

A few that happen to be former students of mine are: @JollyOlChap @josephrueter @juliananagan

I love following these amazingly creative peps too: @adamgarcia @lifterbaron @ghubacek @hapticdata @LovelyMpls

There are so many…!! It’s hard to choose – Here are a few more: @espiekermann @the_nerdery @vimeo @motionographer

Q – #7   Now the FAVS questions: Favorite – Restaurant, store, summer activity and least favorite class in school?

A:   I’ll go backwards: I cant pick a fav class (all were awesome) but my 2 fav professors: Jan Jancourt & @frenchylunning

Fav Restaurant? Right now? BY FAR it’s the @RedStagNE – OMG so so so so so so good. Great happy hour too!

Fav store? I LOVE @hello_robotlove – If you haven’t checked them out – you don’t know what your missing.

summer activity? that’s a tough one… Since I’m a designer & ALWAYS busy I only get a chance to wonder outside…

once in a while… I’m a patio nerd/any restaurant that has a patio/ MPLS summertime = patio seating & a glass of wine!

Q – #8   Before the hour is up w/@humideye – What final thought or mantra would you like to share with everyone?

A:   Final thoughts: Good design can make you more money . . . and save the world / but not in that order.

lol! NO good design really can save the world!! designers are thinkers & problem solvers. Put them to work on…

…big problems & they will always come up with a new & better solution! :) besides, we love a challenge & never sleep

@JoelECarlson – Everybody have a great evening and be sure to follow Twitterview tomorrow when the guest will be @Footenotes at 11am CDT.

@humideye – Thanks SO SO much – this has been super fun!

@humideye – … just noticed one question said “least favorite class in school” – that would have to be MATH (math you are evil)

Twitterview with Jason Wynia

Posted by on Monday, 28 June, 2010

@JoelECarlson – Hello everyone following today’s Twitterview with @jwynia this morning. We appreciate his availability. Lets get going!

Q – #1   So tell us @jwynia – Where did you grow up? What HS did you attend? What did you do for work/school after HS?

A:   I grew up in West Central MN in the New London/Spicer area, 90 mi west of the Twin Cities. Went to New London-Spicer HS

I left high school early to go to Willmar community college. Spent a year at St. John’s U (in MN) until money ran out

Q – #2   @jwyniaSo from community college up until now, what have you done or been pursuing?

A:   Finished a degree in English at St. Cloud. Did a bit of tech writing and then moved on to software development.

I’ve been doing software development ever since.

Q – #3   @jwynia – Whom do you work for, or for yourself? What kinds of projects do you work on?

A:   I am self-employed and generally do relatively large software projects for businesses.

Most of my projects are behind the firewall, the kinds of applications where it’s someone’s job to use the result.

a lot of my work is in web applications, but nearly always includes some heavy-duty back-end data work.

what I most definitely don’t do is build $1000 web sites, which I get asked for all of the time.

Q – #4   What can I get for $9.99? :)  Any particular fields that you focus on or have done a majority of your work for?

A:   My clients have come from a variety of fields and include lots of small businesses as well as Target, Wells Fargo, 3M

Q – #5   Good diversity! How has Social Media helped you professionally, and also personally?

A:   Well, I’ve had a blog for 6-7 years, largely because I had stuff I wanted to say and no one nearby wanted to hear it.

over time, I discovered that every single potential gig I talked to had read it before we talked.

the professional leverage, visibility and credibility that provided was immediately obvious to me.

Social media of various kinds ever since has just been part of that approach, as far as the professional aspect.

It’s also meant that I am always 100% aware that potential clients may be reading what I’m writing.

personally, more recent social media like Twitter have made a pretty big impact on me, expanding my social circle

I have always felt anxious in social situations and a bit of a recluse. Before things like Twitter, that meant…

…I had very few opportunities for the kinds of social interactions I *do* enjoy. Twitter has let me meet so many…

…new and interesting people, both online and in real life and seek out social situations instead of avoiding them.

10 years ago, you NEVER would have found me organizing any sort of party. Now? Tikit tweetup: http://bit.ly/9VmYDI #jectv

I use the Twitter favorites feature constantly to save stuff I like or links I want to follow up on: http://bit.ly/bQdKra

@JoelECarlson – I’ve heard that from other people. How Twitter helps “wall flowers”/shy people grow and express themselves more easily.

Q – #6   Who are 5-10 ppl that you follow that provide you with insight, entertainment or education?

A:   I tend to not follow celebrities, but find @ebertchicago makes me think, even if I don’t always agree with him

@toddkashdan has done some great psych research in happiness and keeps on top of that field.

Q – #7   We are just about out of time, so to end with @jwynia today – What thought or mantra would you like to share?

A:   I am a big skeptic of either/or dichotomies and constantly use a phrase that keeps that in mind…

The glass isn’t half full OR half empty, it’s just too big.

When someone presents a choice or situation as only having 2 possibilities, there’s almost certainly others too.

@JoelECarlson – Very insightful! Thanks so much for being available today @jwynia and sharing some of your life on Twitterviews. Have a good day!

@jwynia – glad to do it.

Twitterview with Sarah Kay Hoffman

Posted by on Friday, 25 June, 2010

@JoelECarlson – Happy Friday to everyone, and welcome to a Twitterview of @SarahKayHoffman. Lets get the party started!

Q – #1   So @sarahkayhoffman – Where did you grow up? Where did you go to High School? What have you done from HS up to today?

A:   I attended the University of #MN #twincities. I’m a #Marketing #Advertising English major.

After college I held various #corporate positions. AE, Sales, Marketing & ultimately Marketing by way of Social Media.

And here I am today, #tweeting with you @starbucks

Q – #2   So what caused the momentum for you to leave MN and move to CA?

A:   We moved from #MN to #CA for my husband’s job. He works for #Viracon based out of Owatonna. Been here 3+ years.

Q – #3   Having been in CA for 3yrs, is there anything about MN you miss? Have you found CA different from the midwest?

A:   I miss something about the #midwest nearly daily. I miss the people. And family. And friends.

People are different here than they are in #mn. Life seems so much more simple back in #mn

But, to make a positive, the weather is gorgeous. I am 2 hours from ocean, mountain, snow and/or sun.

There is a lot to be thankful for in #CA, but when the opportunity presents itself, I’d love to go back to #mn

Q – #4   We will get to your Social Media work, but don’t you have some fitness/exercise interests too?

A:   It actually all kind of meshes for me – Social Media + health/fitness/food & an overall passion for life.

I aim to take what I love & help others – http://bit.ly/skhhealthydeal And shared all via Social Media.

I also have several #food intolerances. So I relate to so many out there struggling with it.

I was also a #nike @humanrace ambassador last year – http://bit.ly/aQrBg I had a fabulous team of running #piedpipers:)

Q – #5   What kinds of things have you done with SM to show your concern & talents for things that interest you?

A:   I would say the biggest (& most recent) thing I’ve done is the Campaign #HireHoff – http://bit.ly/hirehoff

I have also utilized my #blog via http://bit.ly/b824m9 to showcase others! Kind of like your #twitterview

Q – #6   #HireHoff has nothing to do with your worries over David Hasselhoff right?

A:   Funny you mention #thehoff because in the beginning of my presentation I have a #youtube video of his!

#thehoff says, “see it. believe it. live it.” My 3 keys to success are different. I have 3 nonetheless:) #soalike!

Q – #7   So who are some people that influence your SM skills? 5-10 ppl you follow that inspire, educate or entertain you?

A:   My social media inspiration/education @prsarahevans @skydiver @jakrose @digitalroyalty @mattsingley

My #sm entertainment @blakeshelton @joshgroth @missdestructo @nik_nik @chuybravo

But honestly, I learn from so many people on #twitter. There is a ton of intelligence out there.

ps. I am totally inspired, motivated & entertained by Ms. @nikisnotes & @laurasholtz – you should follow them!

Q – #8   FAVS time! – What is your favorite: restaurant, offline store, online store, summer activity & techie gadget?

A:   Favorite Restaurant. Love @axelsbonfire in #mn & @wentecc in #ca

My favorite offline store? @target I could spend all day in there. Never gets old. And it’s #mn-based!

My favorite online store? Soon-to-be #opensky @opensky Currently – I enjoy @amazon & @ebay.

Fav summer activity? BBQ’s! #running outside! Hiking. Taking our dogs on nightly walks. And of course visiting #MN!

Fav techie gadget? Honestly, just my #macbook Pro. I love it so much! But would love the new #iphone!

Q – #9   If you could invite any 1 person dead/alive to dinner, who would you ask and why?

A:   If I could invite 1 person dead/alive to dinner it would be @reba (McEntire). And here is why….

@JoelECarlson - I’m not quite sure what happened to our guest – @sarahkayhoffman, hopefully just a tech glitch. Everyone have a great day.

@sarahkayhoffman – Oh no! Have a great day all! Make sure to join us for the #minneapolis #tweetup Love to meet you!- http://bit.ly/chG6P0

Twitterview with Matt Storlie

Posted by on Thursday, 24 June, 2010

@JoelECarlson – Hello everybody, and welcome to Twitter view part II with @mdstorlie as our 2nd guest of the day. Lets roll!

@mdstorlie – Thanks, Joel! Happy to be here-been looking forward to it for awhile!

I wonder if anyone is following along on their new iPhone 4?! :)

Q – #1   Great! So tell us – Where did you grow up? What High School did you attend? What did you do for work/school after HS?

A:   I grew up in beautiful NE Iowa in Dubuque-Senior High (seems like a lifetime ago :)-got my BBA in Acct from Iowa State (go ‘Clones!).

Married my high school sweetheart & worked back home in Dbq. at a bank for 2 yrs. Then made the move to the big Citi(es) in ’96.

After 2 yrs working in acct in St. Paul, switched to Best Buy Corp in ’98 for 9 yrs (loved working there!), mainly in Internal Audit.

Worked on a couple of fraud investigations while at BBY & “got the bug”, as they say, so I became a Certified Fraud Examiner in ‘07.

Q – #2   So are you still with BBY? Is Social Media involved with your role at all, or do you use it more personally?

A:   No, after I got my CFE, I switched jobs to my current firm in ‘07, Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, and no, we’re not a law firm! ;)

We’re a large regional full-service CPA&Consulting firm. I’m a Manager in Risk Services, specializing in fraud & forensic services.

I use LinkedIn primarily for business, & started Twitter several yrs ago. Had a Facebook acct, however it was hacked back in 12/2009.

I’ve really just gotten sucked into the SM craze, but am amazed at how many different people I’ve come to know in a short time!

I’ve had people in my firm approach me about how I use SM, but as a company, they are slow adopters.

I love to meet my local Tweeps IRL, however. I found out that one of my Tweeps (@hjalm) lives ON MY BLOCK IN MY OWN CITY! ;)

Q – #3   Great! So who are 5-10 people that you follow that either inspire, educate or entertain you? Maybe have become friends.

A:   These Tweeps inspire me daily @ericamayer, “Social Butterflies” @SoTresChic & @aimeecheek, @kevinhendricks, @ms150 & @hunterweeks

My fellow (Mac) geeks @ericsenf @patrickrhone @timeian @dmesserly @etherdust @kevinhoule @hjalm + @shawnking & all of my YML Tweeps

That’s probably enough to mention, for now ;), but I have many, many other friends that I’ve met and discovered through SM.

Q – #4   Nice. Your Twitter BIO says that your a Mac addict. How so?

A:   Well, I converted about 5 yrs ago from PC. The 1st Mac Mini was my 1st foray into Apple products. Love how easy & carefree they are.

Products are elegant, if not locked down tight (doesn’t bother me anymore), and just work. I’m almost to the “fanboy” stage, I think.

I enjoy my online Mac community, including local Tweeps, as well as @yourmaclifeshow, which airs weekly.

Now if only I could get my work to use Mac’s, my life would be complete! ;) But, alas, I’m stuck in peecee-land during the day.

Q – #5   Now for the FAVS question – Favorite: restuarant(s), store(s), summer activity & tech-gadget?

A:   RESTAURANTS -> @punchpizza & a recent local find @cafetwentyeight STORES -> @apple (of course!) @amazon @levenger

ACTIVITY-> cycling (a new find! just recently finished the #ms150) + golf GADGET-> iPad (but so many to choose from-love ‘em!)

Q – #6   Got the iPad! So any interesting apps that you have that you enjoy using on it?

A:   Yeah-waited for the 3G-first device w/ a data plan that I’ve had. @osfoora (Twitter), @1password (security) & Pinball HD is fun. :)

I honestly haven’t had a ton of time to play around with it so far due to my 2nd job – at home with the kids. ;)

Understood. With your job & interests, are there any events or groups that you’ve been involved with that you enjoy?

Q – #7   Understood. With your job & interests, are there any events or groups that you’ve been involved with that you enjoy?

A:   I’ve enjoyed attending & presenting at local roundtables for @theiia. I really enjoy @geekgather, when I can find the time to go. ;)

I’m starting to get into more of the local SM events & groups, but again, w/ a toddler & infant at home, it can be tough to juggle!

Q – #8   If you could invite 1 person (dead/alive) to dinner, who would you invite and why?

A:   My Grandma, who was a big supporter of secondary education, but died from cancer & missed my graduation (1st grandchild) by a few mos

I miss her dearly, and would love to introduce her to my daughter Kate, the first Storlie girl born in nearly 54 years. ;)

Q – #9   That’s touching! :) So to end today – What mantra or thought would you like to leave everyone with today?

A:   To keep current, I’m going to quote goal-scorer & USA-advancing stud, Landon Donovan (love futbol! used to play competitively

“Not only in soccer, but in life, when bad things come your way, you have 2 choices: you can either moan about it or get on with it”

@JoelECarlson - Thanks so much for sharing some of your life story and time with Twitterview today! Have a great evening @mdstorlie!

@mdstorlie – Thanks, @JoelECarlson! I had a blast, and look forward to future Twitterviews. Thank you for providing us this great medium in SM!
